Non-verbal communication - As well as communicating through speech, people use a variety of forms of non-verbal communication. Some of these are referred to as body language. This is due to this type of communication body language or appearance is used to communicate in different ways. For example, when manoeuvring someone and they flinch or grimace with their face they may be expressing pain or discomfort, and a person can use their behaviour, appearance and attitude to send signals or messages to people who receive care, as well as their own colleagues about how they think or feel about a situation using body language or facial expressions. There are many different forms of non-verbal communication such as a persons facial expression, touch or contact, gestures, proximity and eye contact.…
Nonverbal communication includes all manifestations of non-verbal communication: body language, paralinguistics, temporal aspects of non-verbal expression, communication through action, products, barriers, non-verbal constellations congruence between individuals (Dařílek, 2005). Nonverbal communication creates an image of our personality and the impression which it leaves. Up to 55 percent of the information are said by our body language, therefore, we can say body language is speaking without words. However, there are a few noticeable differences in female body language.…
We communicate as much or maybe more through body language as we do with words. This includes facial expressions, eye contact, our stance or movement of arms, hands and legs. E.g. Effective body communication could be an open body stance, focusing your eyes on the service user or individual. Whereas crossing your arms or legs, sideway glances could block effective communication.…
They say a picture paints a thousand words, and the same can be said for Body language. Body language definitely plays a big role in influencing communication, by observing body language alone it makes it easy for you toidentify whether somebody shows interest or puts value in what you are saying. It also allows you to make pre judgements about an individual. For instance an audience or an individual can perceive a speaker/someone as arrogant based on the body language he makes and not the content. Making body language a priority for effective communication.…
There are various ways that body language can be used in a health and social care setting for example Egan’s ‘SOLER’ Communication Theory, Soler is a reminder of all the important non verbal ways possible to show that you are positively engaging in a conversion out of your own interest. ‘SOLER’ is sitting straight on to show that you are paying attention, involved and concerned and not by slouching down and showing that you are bored. Open posture shows that the patient is free to ask you any questions and could gain trust in you because if you fold your arms across your chest it is a closed posture and the patient may feel uncomfortable asking you for any guidance due to your posture. Leaning slightly in shows that you are interested in your patient’s problems. E stands for Eye contact, which is important as it shows that you are paying attention and it could also help the patient build trust by you showing reassurance therefore, it is essential that effective eye contact is provided. Maintaining a relatively relaxed posture is also important so that the patient does not feel intimidated by…

Body language refers to forms of non-verbal communication, wherein a person reveals clues as to some unspoken intention or feeling through their physical behaviour.[1] These behaviours can include body posture, gestures, facial expressions, and eye movements. Although this article focuses on interpretations of human body language, animals also use body language as a communication mechanism.[2] Body language is typically subconscious behaviour, and is therefore considered distinct from sign language, which is a fully conscious and intentional act of communication.…
We use different kinds of nonverbal communication such as; eye contact, facial expression, posture, arm and hand gestures. We even use head positions as non-verbal communication. Usually we only focus on what the other person is saying, some people see our whole body as a way to communicate with each other. We include nonverbal communication when we speak whether we know it or not. Non-engaging body language, others may interpret that as not having an interest in the interaction. That perception may not be accurate but that is how it may be viewed. This can have a serious impact particularly when during job interviews, client introductions, working with colleagues or networking.…
Body language is a form of demonstrative communication. Body language can be anything from crossing of the arms, eye contact, handshakes, and more. A person’s body language and posture can show what someone one is feeling or thinking. It can be the way they hold their arms and where their eyes are fixed upon. If someone crosses their arms it is a sign of disapproval or anger, this can be negative. On the other hand if someone has their arms open that could be a sign of honestly and openness, a positive signal. Eye contact may be one of the most important nonverbal communications out there, and very effective. Direct eye contact with people shows confidence in what the message is. Not making eye contact shows a sign of weakness and therefore shows a lack in confidence in what is being communicated. A third form of body language is a handshake. Handshakes are usually the first impressions made on someone. If the handshake is firm it is a sign of confidence and ambition, something a successful person would do. Too firmly can catch someone off guard so always do it firm enough not to hurt the other person. As for the light and loose handshakes, it suggests someone is nervous and not confident in themselves, a sign of weakness. By watching body language of people will show whether or not what they are telling you is important and worth ones time.…
A lot of people think that winning a negotiation is all about mastering the language skills of bargaining, and to some degree that’s correct. It’s not enough though as body language can say a lot more than voice in process of negotiation. Nonverbal communication can provide a huge advantage in any negotiation. When it comes to effective negotiation, it’s not so much what had say as what had do that really counts. Some studies have revealed that up to 90% of human communication is non-verbal. This means that the way of hold body, the way of moving hands and the expression on face all make more of an impact than the words that are coming out of your mouth. Having a good knowledge of the impact of body language can help you in a huge range of situations throughout your life, especially if often are on either side of a buying and selling transaction.…
