EXAMPLE 1.
I recently read an article that compared the amount of high school dropouts in 1990/1991 and 2009/2010. It stated that in 1990/1991 16.6% of people ages 20-24 did not get a high school diploma and were not attending school. In 2009/2010 the numbers decrease to 8.5%- a very huge drop. It also stated that the dropout rates in 2009/2010 for woman was less than men 6.6%, 10.3% respectively. Immigrants are also less likely to drop out then Canadian-born people. This article outlines mainly education segment and touches on age groups, gender and race. I think that the huge decrease in high school drops can be due to the fact that nowadays to make a good job you are required to have a certain amount of schooling finished. Many companies and businesses focus a lot on what kind of education you have. I feel that in the early 90s it was a bit more lenient in terms of finding a job without schooling finished- that’s not to say that school wasn’t important in the 90s. I also find it very interesting that immigrants are less likely to drop out of school than Canadian-born people. This may be due to the fact that immigrant have come to this country in hopes of better opportunities and could possibly take school a bit more seriously. However this may just be a coincidence as well.

While browsing the Globe and Mail today, I came across an article about two men who made the decision to go to a Royal Canadian Legion Holloween party dressed in very racist and socially unacceptable costumes. Terry Nunn and Blair Crowley dressed themselves as a KKK member pulling around a "Black Face" man through the crowd the entire night. These former police officers were then crowned the winners of the contest at the end of the night.
