All birds lay eggs. Each different birds eggs look different and are different sizes. (Show pictures of various eggs) Usually birds incubate their eggs by supplying heat from their bodies. When eggs hatch the parents take care of the baby birds until they can leave the nest. Ostrich eggs are so strong that an adult human can stand on one and it will not break.

Dr. Curry-Roger’s talk was very interesting and had many different points throughout. The first interesting point mentioned was that dinosaurs are birds. Dr. Curry-Roger explained that both birds and dinosaurs had a lot in common. She stated that birds have feathers that are complex, a fused clavicle, short bony tails, bones that are filled with air sacs, efficient breathing, and a fast growth rate. When comparing fossils to birds, they had many of the same features. Some dinosaurs had feathers, Dr. Curry Roger’s provided us with pictures of these feathers. Additionally, the bones of these fossils also showed evidence of air sacs and had reached sexual maturity quickly, showing that they too were fast growers. Additionally, new evidence shows that dinosaurs may have had collagen found on their claws. All of these combined coincidences make dinosaurs very similar to birds, and would explain the origin of birds.…

Evolution is a natural process in which animals adapt to their surroundings so that they may survive. There are many variables in an animal’s environment that influence its evolution. The purpose of this lab is to examine finches from the island of Darwin and the island of Wallace and how the island size, finches’ clutch size and the precipitation on both islands directly affect the finches’ beak size and population. I believe that a larger island size, larger clutch size and high precipitation will lead to a smaller beak size and larger population.…

Theses two types of birds share some physical traits. The biggest similarity is they both have a crest. The crest is the point of the top of the skull where the bird can raise and lower feathers on the top of its head. The birds will lower and raise the crest to show what it is feeling. If the crest is completely raised the bird has been startled and is and high alert. If the crest is only slightly raised the bird is either relaxed or content with life at the moment. If the crest is completely flattened against the skull the bird is feeling threatened. This is a clear sign that the bird is giving you a warning that it is scared and angry.…

Late Cretaceous birds used geothermal heat in order to incubate their eggs just like some birds today. This would help aid in the survival of some birds. The eggs were incubating between 60-100 degrees Celsius, and for approximately 2-3 months, and also laid 8-12 eggs at a time, and they were also incubating within a small hole covered with dirt and sand, which kept them safe and warm. This would help aid in the survival of the birds because the eggs would already be used to extreme heat, and would be able to resist more heat than most of the species alive at that time. Also, they found that the shells were thicker than most of the other shells because due to the geothermal heating, the shells would wear down over time. The hatchlings would take about 1-2 days to dig their way to the surface, which means that they were able to live underground for a short period of time.…
