Introduction:

The most common fungi in the world is Bread Mold Fungus, also known as Rhizopus stolonifer (NCBI database). This mold is a common problem in most households throughout the world. The experiment being undertaken, changes the ingredients in bread to test the rate in which mold grows differently. These results will also be accommodated with climate control and the effects that could be associated with temperature and humidity.

Mold will not only live and feed on bread, but will also reproduce (Abigail’s bakery). This reproductive process causes the development of Rhizopus stolonifer, which will inevitably decay the bread in a matter of days. Moisture and air filtration control are necessary to control mold growth (Epa, 2012). However, this can be an impossible task for some busy families and mold will accumulate quickly. The solution to these problems could lay in the ingredients themselves. Adding or replacing an ingredient in bread can possibly reduce or even terminate the reproduction of mold spores.

When mold develops on bread, families run the risk of exposing themselves to illnesses and disease. Most mold on bread is harmless, however, some molds are poisonous and can make a person very ill (MABF, 2013). The illness comes from the compounds produced by mold called Mycotoxins (ABC, 2011). Mycotoxins enter the human body through toxic mold and are airbourne. These mycotoxins can end up in the lungs and cause cause breathing problems and other sever problems (Awardspace, 2008).

These mycotoxins, despite being the cause of severe problems, do not have a cure; the only solution is to reduce exposure to them. Black mold particularly requires professional mold services. This is because, when it is attempted to remove black mold, millions of mycotoxins can be released into the air (BTM.com). This is similar to bread mould; mycotoxins can contaminate the bread and spread, posing a massive threat

    The materials needed to conduct this experiment are six small squares of bread, a container of milk, four small Ziploc bags, a thermometer, a phone to record data and a heat lamp. The container of milk will be used for residue on the inside of two of the plastic bags. The heat lamp will be used to generate heat onto the bread towards the possibility of mold. The thermometer is used to measure the heat that the heat lamp is producing; this is to make sure it does not get too hot. The thermometer, milk, and heat lamp are part of the independent variables. The dependent variable is the amount of mold that grows. The experimenter should begin this experiment by organizing their materials so that they are all in front of he/she. Start by opening one of the plastic bags. Over a sink, pour a small amount of milk into the bag, close it then make sure the inside is completely covered in milk residue. Then pour the milk out into the sink. Repeat this process with another bag. Carefully place a piece of bread in each of the milk-saturated bags and secure. Put these bags aside and grab the other two clean plastic bags. Put a piece of bread in each of them and close it. The two extra pieces of bread with be used without a bag, this is the control group. Next find a safe location to keep the bags of bread for the experiment, away from possible culprets such as mice. Once the location is decided, plug in the heat lamp and angle it towards the surface where the bread will sit. The head of the heat lamp should not be anymore than ten inches away from the bags of bread. After the heat lamp is situated, place a bag with milk-residue, a bag with only bread, and a single piece of bread under the heat lamp. Put the other two bags and the other single piece of bread away from the heat lamp, out of the light. Record the data of the bread at the same time everyday for as long until mold…

    Now the material of the item will decide who treatment will take place. Textiles, film, and paper are affected by mold differently and therefore require different approaches on treatment. Mold on textiles should be isolated, sealed in a polyethylene bag until treatment. Treatment can be removal with a low powered vacuum suction (Harvey and Mahard, 324). For the surface cleaning of paper the NEDCC staff suggests if the mold is active it “should first be stabilized by providing the affected materials with a prolonged environment of low relative humidity, generally below 50 percent, so that the mold goes dormant”. Lavendar suggests freezing the material after loosely wrapping in freezer paper to cause the mold to become dormant (58). Now that the mold is dormant the process for eliminating it can take place. Since the mold is dry and powdery it can be extracted from the material with more ease and precision. Rubber cleaning sponges without additives can be used to clean light mold. The sponges must be dry and as the surface gets dirty, cut it away. Do not wash and reuse, throw away in order to avoid spreading the spores (Balloffet and Hille, 84). Other options for cleaning mold suggested by Harvey but have some negative effects are gamma irradiation which is an effective non-chemical method, but has possible harmful effects on cellulose and protein and has not yet been widely adopted. Fungicides used by conservators have their problems. Thymol is toxic and banned in some places, orthophenyl phenol can cause health problems. Ethylene Oxide is a carcinogen so toxic to both humans and fungi (Harvey, 133-134).
