Spirits “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
(Ephesians 6:12)
1. Existence of spiritual powers
There are dark, spiritual, powerful forces at work
We don’t want to be ignorant of Satan and his demonic forces
“And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time… When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, ‘What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!’ For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.”
(Luke 8:27-29)
“But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.”
(Luke 11:20)

Samuel had passed on (1 Samuel 25)
Saul, who was the King, had walked astray from God’s ways
David had been anointed as King, signifying the imminent end of Saul’s regime (1 Samuel 16)
Saul was desperate to remain as King and thus went to consult a medium
