Bell Canada: the Voip Challenge
The Overall Direction of disruptive Technologies
Voice over Internet Protocol is a telephone service operating over the internet.
VOIP provides quality voice communication services to anyone with access to a high speed internet connection which is a growing norm in our society. Voice over Internet Protocol is an exciting innovation to communication technology and can be delivered in one of many ways including:
1) PC to PC
2) PC to Phone
3) Phone to Phone
New Innovations generally have several impacts on businesses in the industry and the business that created it. Established businesses that do not adopt the new concept will usually be left behind the dust while businesses that do will survive.

Strategy
Bell has been pitted against many competitors recently such as long-distance service providers and other VOIP providers. Their strategy thus involved bundling several services and offering a discount to the customer in exchange for timed contracts.
The increase in High-Speed Internet subscribers combined with the decrease in Fixed-line Telephone subscribers presents bell with an initiative to further develop their VOIP capabilities. The current figures show a growing trend leaning more towards an internet lifestyle which favours a telephone service operating over the internet.

Product Subscriber Growth Percentage
Fixed-line Telephone (1.7)
High-Speed Internet 24
Video 7.7
Wireless Telephone 10.4

Bell’s Core Business
Bell focuses primarily on Ontario and Quebec which generates large profits to BCE. Bell’s massive telecommunication networks combined with its good reputable name has established itself as a provider of digital content for families at home.

Competition
Bell faces heavy competition from cable companies that offer similar services.
Cable companies also adopted similar market share strategies to bell

Butler’s Information Resources department played a major role in establishing the new VoIP system at Butler University. The IS department began this entire project by first researching the current system at Butler and identifying what they currently had, and what they needed. They looked at the features provided by Centrex and how their current system worked and developed a plan of what they needed to improve and add to their system. Butler’s IS department researched other systems, listened to vendor presentations, and set up interviews with numerous potential providers in order to narrow down their decision of what system they would be installing. The IS department came across a system called VoIP that was extremely intriguing to them. Although it was a fairly new and expensive system, they saw it as an opportunity to improve their current system drastically. “Only twelve to thirteen percent of the market had VoIP installed in 2004. Even though the telecommunications landscape was changing with an emerging trend of increasing IP lines, the current statistics were still daunting and left us wondering if this was a good path to…

Public switch telephone networks (PSTN) charge based on minutes whereas Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) charges based on data usage. VoIP services charge a flat fee and Skype actually offers free talk between Skype users. VoIP is likely to grow significantly, taking away from PTSN’s market. VoIP is also cheap to operate as the infrastructure is already there. VoIP is also considered part of the information service industry and not the telecommunication service industry giving it an advantage politically against PTSN.…
