SC300 UNIT 2 ASSIGNMENT
A string of absences are currently being experienced at four different middle schools within the month of May. The percentage of absences is outside the statistically normal range exhibited by District 12. School District – Independent School District 12 Attendance data page. (n.d.). Retrieved October 24th, 2010, from “http://science.education.nih.gov/Supplements/NIH6/inquiry/Activities/activity1/school-district/attendance-data.htm” The Investigative Staff needs to establish if the information indicates a probable outbreak of an infectious disease, if one exists we must establish what type of disease, and the possible method(s) to how this exposure began.
Testable Questions:
1. What percentage above normal statistics in the month of May, were absent?
2. What classes or course of study received the most absences?
3. How do the absences relate to one another?
4. Are the symptoms of the absent students consistent with one another?
5. Were any of the absent students at any school social events or competitions together?
Hypothesis one: Utilizing the absence data given in regards to the month of May, along with parent interviews and calendar events we can compare absences and symptoms with recent calendar events. Once we have an increase of absences we can start our trending of events (chart 3) who was involved and when they took place. We can then monitor what schools had direct contact with one another and process the results. Using the above listed data and overwhelmingly consistent student symptoms. I have determined that our recent influx of absences is due to a viral infection known as gastroenteritis commonly referred to as the Stomach Flu (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research). Among the material aspects surrounding residential schools, health care problems were the biggest concern to staff and students. The health of students was not highly regarded unless there was reason to believe it was a serious illness, such as the outbreaks of measles, tonsillitis, Spanish influenza, and tuberculosis to name a few. “Although outbreaks of various diseases hit schools from time to time, tuberculosis continued to be the biggest threat to the lives of residential schoolchildren” (Miller, pg. 304), noted Miller in his writing. Schools reportedly accepted children who were ill to maintain their grants and continue to augment their enrolment numbers. Poverty amongst the schools made it difficult to provide the necessary…

“Hard lives” do not justify excessive absences simply because they will get too far behind and miss an excessive amount of notes. Along with Mr. Culpepper, “I have also found students who manage to complete a full load of classes successfully while working three jobs, caring for elderly, and coping with chronic illness…” (330). As in most universities or colleges, these students are already given a certain amount of days for absences. In most cases, six absences are allowed for the semester which is two and half weeks of class. If the students save these absences for emergencies, six absences are more than enough for one semester.…

Why I was late for PT on Monday is that I did not wake up when my alarm on my phone went off. This may have been because I got very little sleep last weekend, and I also went through a bad break up, but that is still no excuse. I should have found a way to wake up and been to PT on time Monday. How I plan on fixing myself is that I plan on buying an actual alarm clock and using that. I plan to set it on the other side of the room, so that when it goes off, I actually have to get up to turn it off. There fore resulting in me having already gotten out of bed and not going to fall back asleep. Currently how I have it fixed though I that I have multiple alarms set up on my phone so that in case I do fall back asleep I will be woken up by another alarm. I also have to call Corporal Flores at 0500 to tell him that I am awake, at 0520 I have to call Corporal Jabalde to let him know that I am awake. then again at 0530 I have to call Corporal Flores telling him that I have a ride. I have to call Corporal Flores for a week straight(excluding weekends). Along with that if I do not call him one time, further actions will be taken to ensure that I am awake and ready for PT on time.…
