Doing well in high school with a high GPA and scoring well in the ACT and/or the SAT will increase the probability of receiving up to a fully paid tuition, room and board. While attending the college in order to keep the academic scholarship, it is most likely you will have to have a minimum GPA to continue to retain that academic scholarship. With regards to being an athlete, how you perform will also be the factor as to whether or not you retain your athletic scholarship, whether it is increased or decreased or removed.
The college experience is broadened by being a scholar athlete with the opportunity to travel for competition. Being able to travel is a big factor to me wanting to be a scholar athlete. I would be able to see parts of the country that I wouldn't have if I wasn't a college athlete. Little to few students who attend a college or university, only as a student, are able to travel during their undergraduate years. Being a scholar athlete at a college or university enables the athlete to travel to many different cities and states in our country. Typical in the athletic program, student athletes will receive workout gear, travel gear and competition uniforms. When traveling you will find at airports, bus stations and train stations, college teams traveling together and looking alike in their travel uniforms as they represent their college.
Being a student athlete is a delicate balance between your class work and the dedication you need for your sport.
It requires a lot of discipline to maintain your grades in the classroom while spending time on your sport. The free time a student athlete gets is very limited, it is imperative to balance your free time with the time it takes to be successful in the classroom. It is very possible that someone will have to travel for their sport and the classwork doesn't stop the normal student does not have the requirements that a student athlete has as far as practice and travel many times students have to balance work and classwork the student athlete has to balance the sport and their classwork. Multiple times games are scheduled on weeknights and it is a requirement to miss a class. To travel to the game. It is the student athletes responsibility to make up any homework or take any tests prior to leaving on the trip. This is one example of the dedication it takes to maintain your grades while you were a student athlete. The athletic scholarship is dependent upon the student athlete maintaining a certain GPA. Going to class and being a good citizen are some of the other requirements that are needed in order to maintain your
scholarship.
Building relationships while attending college is something that most every student will have happen from the day they come to campus to the day they graduate. However, being a part of a sports program will make those connections and relationships building more on a fast track due to the daily workouts and training sessions and the team has. Most colleges offer study tables for incoming freshmen required to meet 2 to 3 times a week for 2 to 8 hours per week. This ensures the student athlete is maintaining a good GPA and study habits. During these Study sessions, these athletes are bonding and building relationships by working together and being an atmosphere where they are required to study and learn.
The athletic scholarship student athlete receives is a major impact for the years they attend during their undergraduate studies. Not only does this scholarship help pay for tuition, room, and board, the experiences you get during traveling for competition, the discipline required and the relationships built with your teammates will last a lifetime.
