The author believes that this one in particular succeeds in circumventing its own polemical potential and is set apart from other similar works because of its optimistic act of consciousness-raising. One of the works, the “Truth Trophy” challenges the assumption that surround the ordering and presentation of history. In the middle of this installation is a globe contained in Plexiglas. On one side of the globe there are three white pedestals with sculptures of white historical figures. On the other side there are three empty black pedestals. Figural reliefs decorated the inner and outer walls, depicting different mythological creatures or gods in tranquil settings, which contribute to the overall theme of peace in Augustus’ empire. The organized structure of the reliefs represent a controlled empire ruled by Augustus. In particular, the relief on the south frieze of the altar proves the specific propagandistic-type of art in the Augustan era. Standing 5’3’’ high, this relief depicts the imperial family and dignitaries, most likely inspired by the Panathenaic Festival Procession frieze from the Classical Period of Greece. However, the roman relief illustrates a specific event, “the inaugural ceremony of 13BCE when work on the altar began” (Klein, 200). The procession is made up of identifiable figures in the imperial family and members of the Senate along with children at their feet. In line with Augustan portraiture, the people’s faces are idealized and free of flaw, portraying these influential people as godlike. The children’s dispositions, however, deviates from the usual…
Around the late 1800s and early 1900s, there were fixed roles for men and women as dictated by a male dominated society. The Awakening, written by Kate Chopin in 1899, can be taken to show how some women of that particular time felt confined. They were expected to be everything: a caring mother, a loving wife, a social friend. In The Awakening, the main character, Edna, decides to veer off from that path of what is socially expected from her, and in such creates her own desolation. She opts to satisfy herself over what she is accountable for. In the end, there could be no happy ending for her because of this. Chopin assimilates many motifs and symbols including minor characters to contrast Edna’s complications with her own identity and place…

Religion plays a key role in many lives today, and has been for many years—Chartres cathedral fed this appetite with the stories behind the windows, the history behind the sacred tunic and the uses behind the labyrinth. For the longest time, the stained glass in Chartres were one of the main sources of religious knowledge. The windows have been supplying all around it with the stories of the Old Testament, the Virgin Mary and the life of Christ—many of the windows were used as “a ready source of instruction for the illiterate population” because education was not as valued in these times. These windows, through their extreme importance, proved to be a huge benefactor in the lives of the inhabitants of Chartres. In addition, the cathedral was said to have housed a tunic that supposedly belonged to Blessed Virgin Mary. This tunic was thought to be lost when the first cathedral burned down, but “after three days of cooling, priests who had taken shelter in the underground vaults emerged from the ruins, amongst many witnesses, with the relic intact.” This in itself had proven to the people of Chartres to be a miracle, and…

The globalisation of markets has increased customer demand and product differentiation. Higher quality products and shorter delivery times are essential for maintaining customer satisfaction in highly competitive markets like the consumer electronics industry. Consequently, supply chain management is an important process in all businesses, and if managed effectively, can give companies a competitive edge. However, it often requires a lot of time and resources. Businesses that manage the entire supply chain in-house will usually find this process almost impossible, especially when supply chain management is not a core competency of the firm. Therefore, a third party logistics provider (3PL) can take the pressure off these companies and allow them to focus on what they are good at. They can offer greater flexibility and access to more advanced supply chain technology. However, this does not mean companies can simply take the back seat. Businesses that are successful work together with their supply chain partners in a close relationship. Only then do they realise the full potential of a 3PL.…
In the Anglo-Saxon poem, “The Dream of the Rood,” the author’s purpose is to impress upon his audience the power of salvation offered by Christianity, as represented by the crucifix. For the author, the crucifix, or Rood, is no mere symbol, but a literal embodiment of salvation. At the time it is believed to have been written, the poet’s audience consisted of a spectrum of Christian followers and pagans who retained the traditions and culture of their Germanic, Norse, and Danish ancestors. Even many of the Christian followers in the audience would have had strong ancestral ties to pagan beliefs. To effectively reach this disparate and evolving crowd with his message of Christian salvation, the author employs several established poetic devices, common in the oral traditions of the various and blended Anglo-Saxon tribes. Narrative structure, vivid imagery, and anthropomorphism are key poetic devices used to appeal to Christians and non-Christians alike. Using these devices, “The Dream of the Rood” incorporates the ideals and entertainment value of a non-Christian oral tradition into a homiletic allegory about the Passion of Christ and the promise of Christian salvation.…
