The South's predominant economic principle before the War of Northern Aggression was "Cotton is King." The South, as it was known around the turn of the 19th century, was solely dependent upon its cotton production. Low prices, unmarketable goods, and over-used land were driving the necessity for slavery and the need for cotton production out. Were it not for a Yankee's ingenuity, the South as we study it now may have been vastly different.…

Communication to me is a way to get a message out to sent and received to an individual this can be accomplished in a variety of ways. A deaf person will communicate with their hands in the form of sign language. People also communicate through body language, an example that I can give is if a patient is in pain but unable to speak some will start adjusting their body, closing their eyes, wrapping their arms around the area that is in pain, or even rocking motions. When I am in a bad mood I will start to roll my eyes and my words can be short and sharp, sometimes when I want to be extra attractive to my husband I will walk with an extra pep in my step, smile, and bat my eyes. As we can see from the start communication is done in several ways it does not always have to be expressed verbally it can be done written as well. We have to remember that communication is the purpose of getting an idea across to a group, or a person.…

Deborah Tannen’s “Sex, Lies, and Conversation” is a brief look at how men and women communicate with one another and the cross-culture differences between their individual styles and needs for conversation. Women often say that men do not listen or do not want to talk. Tannen gives reasons why women tend to believe that men are not listening, and shows that just because men have a different approach to communicating does not mean they are not listening to what women are saying. She uses several different examples to back up her statements including early childhood differences in communication between girls and boys, the body language men use and how women tend to interpret it, and how women tend to receive information while communicating. Men and women have very different expectations when it comes to communicating with one another.…

Though Lars lives in deep isolation through the beginning of the film, he fails to realize that his behaviour is out of the ordinary. Throughout the exposition of the film, Lars’s character is developed to show how he behaves around others and how he refuses to interact or socialize with those in his town. The opening sequence of the film depicts Lars in his most solitary and lonely state. He is shown looking outside of the window in his home in the garage, with the bars symbolizing how he is imprisoned in his own isolation. Lars is holding the blanket his mother had knit for him in front of his mouth, and this displays how the blanket is his main source of security. While the opening sequence reveals Lars in a deeply isolated environment, Lars fails to realize that he is doing this to himself. He perceives himself as being completely normal and that he is perfectly fine, despite living in solitude.…

Why people would not consider a man as a woman or vice versa? Men and women are distinct by many ways: different mind-set, different physiological functions as well as characteristics, and so on. Those differences become obstacles between sexes, bonding them together but also separating them apart. One of the obstacles is derived from their different mind-set, which ultimately turns out to numerous difficult conversations between men and women. “Hills like White Elephant,” written by Ernest Hemingway, is a short story mainly composed by a dialogue between a man and a girl. The conversation, which is an argumentative talk, between them is hard and futile because neither of them achieves their goals.…

Speak is written with the intent of drawing the reader in and initiating the gut feeling which we learned is created with the use of metafiction. Anderson writes the whole book in present tense and from Melinda’s point of view. The grammar she uses is casual and is written how a typical teenager would talk. The dialogue within Melinda’s head is sarcastic and vivid, starkly contrasting the introverted facade she erects to protect herself. This insight into her mind evokes sympathy for Melinda and a connection to a character that doesn’t really exist.…

Coming to St. Edward’s was my dream. Who would have guess that the little girl I was at 5 would ever have the opportunity to move there one day. But the truth was that moving from France to Texas hasn’t been an easy task to do especially after all the French cultural background I’ve been use to my whole life. Everything is different when you come from Europe. But the thing I was the more worried about was the first day at school, not because I was alone and in a foreign country, but because I didn’t know how to behave and act with people here. As for the appearances, people looked the same; we were all young and college students. As I was meeting my first American friend, I leaned to him to give him two kisses on the cheeks as we are used to do in France. It’s been the weirdest moment of my American experience so far: I didn’t know it but here we hug. At that moment I really thought that there should be an instruction manual for whoever moves to Texas. The movie Fear and Trembling relates the story of Amelie Nothomb, a Belgian young woman. Amelie was born and raised in Japan, but her family background comes from Belgium. She moved back there when she was five. The film tells the story of Amelie, whenever she returned to Japan after getting the job offer as an interpreter within one of the most important Japanese company: Yumimoto. She always admired the Japanese refinement, sophistication and their art of living and her dream has always been to go back and live there as a real Japanese. But when she gets there, it’s a whole different reality that appears to her, Japan’s system is rigid, and she’s a lot of trouble getting used to it. Her adaptation is hard and everything she does is bad and looks rude for her Japanese fellows. This is the story of a cruel and unfair decline: she is getting down the levels of the Japanese society until the position…
