Should regulations regarding payment to college athletes be changed?
I have selected the persuasive writing genre to investigate the question "Should regulations regarding payment to college athletes be changed?" for two reasons. The first reason is that this issue is very complex, and this paper is geared to focus in on answering a set narrow, objective questions to get to heart of the issue so the average person can have a factual view of this issue. The persuasive writing genre helps me address the following questions when engaged in the research of this subject: What do I plan to accomplish, why you want to research this particular topic, and how I'm going to do it. The second reason is that this genre is intended to convince my instructor, audience, and others that this is worthwhile research topic and that I have the competence and the work-plan to complete it.

In view of the facts stated above, my thesis statement will be "College Athletes should be paid for the work they perform and the regulations should be changed to reflect this new reality. " It is no great secret that for some colleges, college sports are a principle source of funding, and they attract students to their institutions. Universities relay on their athletes to display and maintain the popularity of their school's name and reputation. Also College athletes are considered as amateur players, and the NCAA wants to protect the athlete from being influenced by money like the professional players are. Even though, college players have not gotten to the professional level, they are required to work at their sports like they are professionals.

My initial audience I want to reach are the fans, booster club members and

Why should college athletes be paid to participate in their sports? College athletes are awarded tuition free college due to their hard work and athletic abilities, why should they get paid extra money outside of their tuition being paid? Student athletes in college only have two jobs while they are attending, to learn and become a better and smarter athlete. These student athletes don’t need extra money outside of having their tuition, room and board, and food paid for. They are also given clothing which takes away another money based need. These student athletes are given much more than other students and yet they still believe that they should be paid for their extra work outside of their performances. The main reason is because they are already paid through their scholarships to go to school and play sports. Other reasons to this opinion is to maintain their amatuer status, difficult…

The notion of paying college athletes has been an ongoing and controversial debate for student-athletes, coaches, schools, media and most certainly the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Many would argue that playing major college sports is more like a job versus an extracurricular activity. As with the majority of many student athletes, some attend college with the aspiration of becoming professional players thereby college is seen as a means to end. Although student-athletes already receive compensation via full and partial scholarships to participate at the college level, passionate conversations will continue to be a topic of debate because of the enormous revenue generated by college sports.…

We often look at college athletes as miniature stars. The question is, why should student’s athlete get a paycheck for playing amateur level sports? Athletes complain about how they do not get enough for playing a sport. They are forgetting that they are being rewarded with a half or full scholarship. The main goal for these athletes is being academically successful. Not who has the best jump shot or who fumbled a ball, that does not matter. The essence of playing college level has been taken out of place, now replaced with the mindsets of professional athletes. Did they forget? You are not professionals. The love of the game has been through extortion for the love of money. Paying college athletes will lead the students astray from what they attended the institution to accomplish in the first place, that is, to earn a degree, not to gain a compensation.…

College athletes should be paid in order to: help them financially accommodate their expensive lifestyles, give them the money they played hard to earn, and to eliminate unethical recruiting and under the table payments. Considering how hard it is to support yourself while playing sports in college, the millions of dollars universities and the NCAA makes off of you and your teammates, and the unfair advantages in recruiting that some colleges deploy, paying student athletes should be heavily considered by everyone that calls themselves a sports…

Corruption, scandals, suspensions, firings and a systems that is systematically flawed all the while the fact of the matter is that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a organization that is bringing in billions of dollars each year yet the labor force generating the money gets a scholarship that many athletes believe doesn’t pay enough for everything that is needed on campus so this leads the author to have to take a look at if athletes need to be paid. I will outline numerous problems that are going on in college athletics and possible solutions to problems. I will take a look at the scholarship itself to determine if that is sufficient enough for campus life. The bottom line is from the outside looking in is that there is a lot money going into the hands of administrators and coach’s with none going into the people shedding the blood sweat and tears. It would seem that the system in place at times, wants to make the student athlete stand around with their hands out accepting all and any money that they can find from an outside source, which is in violation of NCAA bylaws concerning amateur sports.…

Over decades, there have been athletes pouring their heart and soul into their sport that they have worked for. For years, the love of the game has gotten almost each and every elite athlete to a university where they can showcase their ability and talent. However, for the Division 1 level it is more or less a business, and your job is to bring in as much profit to your university as you can. Regardless of the business, a true athlete will play the game with a desire to win in their hearts. In recent years there has been controversial question as to which every athlete is thinking. College players need to get paid for what they do. When college players do not get paid, they do not get paid for the great things that they do on national TV. College players make more money for school playing their sport than people's salaries. Did you know that just if you make it to the NCAA BCS game, you get at least six million dollars. That's not even if you win. Sure student athletes get free things like free tuition, board, room fees, and food, but paying players would give them money for things like laundry, late night snacks, food for restaurants when on the road, and just different things. The three reasons why student athletes should get paid is because playing a college sport is like having a job, college players make money for…

Should we pay college athletes? That is a big topic in NCAA sports right now. People think that college athletes work hard and that they deserve to get paid. Michael Wilbon is one of these people. At first he was against paying college athletes, but now he is all for it. He says that he is interested in seeing the people that make revenue share a little piece of it. Then you have people like a reporter from the Daily Evergreen. He is against paying the athletes. He states that when you are a student athlete it is student first and athlete second, and that if you start paying college athletes it will put being an athlete first. I strongly think that college athletes shouldn’t be paid for playing sports in college. Paying players to play sports in college can cause players to ruin their career, cause the NCAA to be one sided, and would take away scholarships.…

Well...Well...Well...Look at what we have here. Many students some who may want to become college athletes. But guess what? You are not going to get paid. Why is it that determined college athletes do not get paid, while other people with a job do? College athletes wake up everyday, to work day and night, practicing the sport they specialize in. I'm positive these athletes dedicate nearly all of their work and time for this sport, however do not get rewarded for it. Similar to when you work for your ignorant manager, yet they keep the money for themselves and do not pay you. This exemplifies how college athletes feel when they lay foot on to the court, the field, or the ice. This is not fair, and college athletes must be paid because they work with determination comparable to professional athletes, maybe even to a greater extent, since they also have to balance their school schedule. As a result, college athletes deserve to be paid for all the effort…

Student athletes should be compensated for their work, as they are the sole reason for the Athletic Program’s surplus in revenue. These athletes are working for the schools and are doing a service to the college that seems to go unnoticed. Colleges are using these athletes to boost their respective reputations and bring in revenue while not compensating these athletes for their work. Everywhere else athletes are paid, so why shouldn’t college students too? Some critics may argue that these student-athletes are amateurs, and if paid then are becoming professional athletes. The minor league for baseball could be considered an amateur sport, although they do receive pay according to the team’s revenue.…

Year after year, they put the madness in March. They bring traditions unlike any others to the network every Saturday of fall. They make millions upon millions of dollars for their respective universities. Yet, today’s college athletes see absolutely none of that money. Rod Gilmore, a football analyst for ESPN, in the article, “College Football Players Deserve Pay for Play,” claims that athletes should have a share in money in this multibillion-dollar entertainment industry. In fact, if they are given some sort of payment or gift, they risk suspension, expulsion, or even punishment towards their university. If the NCAA would revise rules that were set decades ago so that they would apply to the collegiate athlete of today, many problems that exist would be solved.…
