Aryan Brotherhood
ARYAN BROTHERHOOD

Growing up most people has been part of a group, one way or another. Girls grew up being Girl scouts or Campfire girls, and boys had Boy scouts and baseball. Well, on that note, I remember having a pledge in Girls Scouts.
Well the Aryan Brotherhood also has a pledge: "I will stand by my brother
My brother will come before all others
My life is forfeited should I fail my brother
I will honor my brother in peace and war"
They also live by the motto, "in for life and out by death."
This Brotherhood take these words to heart, and will do anything for a brother whether they are in prisons, jails, or free on the street to handle affairs for others. The Aryan Brotherhood formed in 1964, by white inmates from the infamous San Quentin State Prison, in Northern California.
January 16th, 1967 a Nazi prison-gang associate Robert Holderman was stabbed and then battered to death by Black Guerilla Family gang members at San Quentin prison. The very next day, January 17th, 1,800 black inmates and 1,000 white inmates clashed on the main yard at San Quentin prison over the death of Robert Holderman. The prison guards broke up the brawl by firing shots into the mass of inmates. One inmate suffered severe head trauma from the beating he received from opposing gang members. Two other inmates suffered non-fatal heart attacks.
August 27th, 1967 nineteen-year-old Barry Byron Mills was arrested in Ventura, California and held for transfer to Sonoma County, where he had stolen a car. Sonoma County had issued an arrest warrant in his name for grand theft auto. On December 12th, that same year, Barry Mills requested and was denied probation. Instead he was sentenced to one year in the Sonoma County Jail. Within less than two months later on January 12th, 1968, Barry Mills and Buddy Coleman escaped from the Sonoma County Honor Farm. Of course this facility was not a jail or a prison, so there for very low security, with non-violent offenders.

An inmate by the name of Bernard Coy, bank robber who was serving 25 years at Alcatraz was the mastermind. Bernard coy studied the routines and patterns of the guards for months before he acted out on his plan. Climbing hand over hand, he scaled the barred cage until he reached the top.” (Battle of Alcatraz, pg1).With a device that was made from a workshop, he managed to bend the bars 10 inches apart. Bowles was practically raised in a jail cell with all the prison rules and regulations; to him it was his house. He was first arrested when he was 12 years old. He had been convicted for killing an officer, kidnapping, and several counts of murder including an old couple in which he had stolen their vehicle. Carls was on top of the food chain almost everyone was scared of him and all new inmates would be recommended to stay with him for protection. Inmates would do research of their own to figure out when new inmates; know as fish would be admitted to the facility, as everyone would fight over them to make them do their dirty deeds. Carl ran upon Thomas Little a new comer which was accidently placed in a maximum security facility. Thomas hanged out with Carl Bowles until he got relocated to a lesser security facility with the help of Bowles. Wardens and other inmates wondered if Carls being a sexual predator was using him as his slave. After all he was taking care of him and looking out for him. Inmates state that no one will take care of another inmate unless they benefit from it. Carl Bowles goes into great details stating that Thomas little was just his friend and that if he wanted any kind of sexual pleasure he had plenty of inmates that were willing to satisfy his needs.…

In 1971 the Attica Prison, located near Buffalo, New York, erupted into a riot (“Riot at Attica Prison”). Many of the inmates at the correctional facility had strong emotions about the treatment they and others were receiving at this prison. Physical brutality, lack of medical treatment, and poor sanitation were just a few points of interest the inmates wanted to see change (Berman). On the morning of September 9, a minimal amount of prisoners overpowered guards and seized control of a prison gallery (“Riot at Attica Prison”). After access was granted to this prison gallery, the prisoners were able to access all areas of the correctional facility. It was at this time all 2,200 prisoners went into a rebellion, brutally destroying the facility. However, by 10:30 a.m., state police with the help of the National Guard regained control of most of the prison without any lives lost (“Riot at Attica Prison”). The only area remaining to regain control of was the D yard, and in an attempt to do just that, state police, as well as the national guard, tear-gassed everyone located inside this area (Berman). Frank Smith, an inmate who resumed the job of a guard during the prison riot was in yard D at the time of this occurrence. “The first thing I seen and hear was a helicopter circling over the yard, you know, and then gas, and then a loudspeaker, ‘Put your hand on your head and you won't be harmed,’” Frank Smith recounts in a interview with PBS (Douglass). The information Frank Smith provided at that time helped the citizens, who were not present at the time of the riot, to fully understand the events that had taken place. After state officials agreed to the inmates demands, they regained control of the correctional facility returning the prison to normal. The Attica Prison Riot signifies the worst prison riot in the United States history with 43 people left dead (“Riot at Attica…
