Army Uniform
As stated in AR 670-1, Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia, paragraph 1-7 A, “General. The Army is a uniformed service where discipline is judged, in part, by the manner in which a soldier wears a prescribed uniform, as well as by the individual’s personal appearance. Therefore, a neat and well-groomed appearance by all soldiers is fundamental to the Army and contributes to building the pride and spirit essential to an effective military force. A vital ingredient of the Army’s strength and military effectiveness is the pride and self-discipline that American soldiers bring to their Service through a conservative military image.
The US Army is a disciplined institution. Properly wearing the Army uniform is extremely important to military success. How to wear the army uniform is important because when we put on the uniform we don’t just represent ourselves but the army as a whole as well. Wearing it properly and having a good personal appearance is part of the discipline of each member of the service and demonstrates to his or her pride in being part of an effective military force. Therefore, all personnel must maintain a high standard of dress and appearance. You are not only representing the military but representing who you are as a person, and it represents your team members as well as your unit and your command.

Army regulation that governs the soldier’s hair and grooming practices and/or accommodations because of religious practices. The requirement for hair grooming standard is important to maintain uniformity within a soldier population. Many hair styles are acceptable as long as they are very neat and conservative. Soldiers were given exceptions based on religious practices in accordance with Army Regulation 600-20 on and before to 1 January 1986 which still remain in effect as long as the soldiers remain otherwise qualified for retention. It is impossible to address every acceptable or unacceptable haircut, or what is or is not eccentric or conservative grooming of the hair. The leaders at all levels are responsible for exercising good judgment of the Army policies and regulations. Judgment of certain haircuts and or hairstyles is supposed to be determined while the soldier’s headgear is worn.Army Regulation 670-1 covers the wear and appearance of military uniforms. Toward the end of the 1770s, a new type of dress for boys began to emerge. Knee breeches were cast off in favor of trousers, which were emerging for the first time as acceptable fashionable dress. Trousers, buttoned together at the waist, were accompanied by a short jacket, an outfit that became known as a skeleton suit and usually worn with a soft fall collar shirt. At the same time it became fashionable for young girls to wear light unboned muslin frocks, short sleeved with a natural waistline and adorned with a simple ribbon sash about the waist. These new styles…

One obvious contrasting factor between the Air Force and the Army is that the two branches wear different uniforms. In the Army, members will wear a uniform known as the Army Combat Uniform, but in the Air Force members will wear a uniform called the Airman Battle Uniform. Although these branches wear different uniforms individuals are required to meet the same dress and appearance standards. For example, members from both branches are required to keep a sharp appearance such as the men having a high and tight hair cut not to exceed one and a half inches in bulk; females are required to wear their hair in a neat bun,…

The US Army 670-1 is the basis for the wear and appearance of all military uniforms to include ACU , BDU, DCU, ASU, and all PT uniforms. It was formed so that all soldiers wear the uniform the same to instill discipline and a professional appearance. This regulation applies to officers and enlisted the same. It was formed to give the exact dimensions for badges tabs patches and rank. The proponent of this regulation is the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-1. The proponent has the authority to approve exceptions or waivers to this regulation that are consistent with controlling law and regulations. The proponent may delegate this approval authority, in writing, to a division chief within the proponent agency or its direct reporting unit or field operating agency, in the grade of colonel or the civilian equivalent. Activities may request a waiver to this regulation to this regulation by providing justification that includes a full analysis of the expected benefits and must include formal review by the activity’s senior legal officer. All waiver requests will be endorsed by the commander or senior leader of the requesting activity and forwarded through their higher headquarters to the policy proponent. Refer to AR 25-30 for specific guidance. As stated there in the beginning of the 670-1 there is only a few people that actually have the power to change or alter the uniform. So the big things looked for in uniform discrepancies is lopsided rank or badges, gaps in the badges to the army patch. And all ribbons are in order. We have these rules to keep the public view and the universal view of our army as professional and not a group of missfits. A sense of pride should be in every soldier as to how they where there uniform which today soldiers tend to wear the uniform however they please with no corrections or actions taken by those appointed over them. Now this is not only a problem in leadership but in the individual soldier. Todays army problems are starting from the very…

The purpose of Army Regulation 670-1 as stated in chapter 1 paragraph 1-1 is as follows. “This regulation prescribes the authorization for wear, composition, and classification of uniforms, and the occasions for wearing all personal, (clothing bag issue), optional, and commonly worn organizational Army uniforms. It also prescribes the awards, insignia, and accouterments authorized for wear on the uniform, and how these items are worn. General information is also provided on the authorized material, design, and uniform quality control system.” The book answer to the purpose of the regulation only goes so far. If you look further into the regulation it states that the United States Army is a uniformed service that is judged, in part, by the way a soldier wears their uniform. This being said, if a soldier wears their uniform in a manner which is not clean and neat in appearance, and portrays the army poorly, the members of the United States Army would be viewed in a poor and undisciplined manner. Whereas if the members of the United States Army hold themselves to a higher standard, and maintain a neat and clean appearance, the members of the uniformed service will be viewed by the outside world as an organization which personifies what discipline is supposed to be. While we are on the subject of discipline, I think it would be good to explore it and it’s relation to the importance of Army Regulation 670-1. Discipline is one of the cornerstones of the United States Army. Discipline can set you above and beyond everyone else, and it can help you excel in everything you do. What is…

If you are really interested in the army or things like that, you probably like to wear camouflage clothing. If you want to wear those styles of clothes to school you can't because the teachers and the principals will think it is gang related, and you would get in trouble for wearing those clothes. When you want to wear two different colors of shoe laces because it matches your clothes, or you think it looks cool, it will be considered gang related. As long as you are there to learn you should be able to wear an earring or even a cap as long as you are not messing with it non stop. Students should be able to wear anything they…

How to wear the army uniform is important because when we put on the uniform we don’t just represent ourselves but the army as a whole as well. One thing I have learned in my short 20 years of life is how important the clothes you wear impact you as person. Because they can be tell tell sings of what type of person you are. As in the book “APPERANCES” witch talks about how the clothes you wear can say a lot of what type of person you are, or how do you live your lifestyle. Another good point, everyone wearing the same uniform makes it hard for the enemy to count how many soldiers are attacking. If everyone is different it is easy to distinguish individuals and therefore easier to count them. If we all look the same it makes it very hard to count us because we nearly blend together. The uniform is designed to soften the outline of the human body and they will easily miscount soldiers. Also, there is a reason we have an a SOP for our full battle rattle, everything is in the same spot so it will be easy and quick to find a wounded soldiers IFAK or other supplies. In a combat situation speed and efficiency is critical. Another example is safety, we all wear our armor plates and kevlars (even patches) in specific way because its is the most effective way to wear them. Being an individual or thinking you are special in this situation could cost you your life. Finally for camaflouge, DUH! What dumbass would wear their PTs to a combat mission?…

Presenting a professional appearance shows the American and foreign civilian population that the Army is a group of trained, disciplined professionals, upholding the highest standards and acting as a disciplined adult. This appearance can be degraded by actions such as: walking and smoking, drinking/eating while walking, utilizing a cell phone while walking, use of profanity, and improper uniform wear, just to name a few. All of these cumulatively affect the civilian perspective on the Army and US Military as a whole.…

In the current day one usually expects to see American soldiers with neatly trimmed, short hair, as is the standard of today Army. However many do not realize that there have been radical changes since the American Revolution in these standards. A significant reason being the accessibility and ease at which one, now a day can groom and access a barber. Thinking back to the 18th century there were not as many barbers in the American colonies that meant soldiers usually had rather long hair. General orders did require male soldiers to wear their hair braided up or short, along with an option of wearing long hair that was powdered and dried. This powdered and dried technique was done with a mixture of flour and animal fat, and then tied in a pigtail or queue.…
