Many states had laws prohibiting free blacks from residing in them at all or required registration and bonds. During the Revolutionary Era from 1765-1815, slavery existed in thirteen colonies. Maryland went from white servants to slaves. There was an agricultural economy that existed in the South that was dependent on the labor of slaves. Although slavery did not exist in the North exclusively; New York, Philadelphia, and New England were involved in the trade of slaves; so although the South was exclusively using slaves as an economic gain, the North also had financial benefits as a result of the existence of slavery. In the aftermath of the Revolution, slavery began to cease in the North. In Massachusetts they ruled slavery as not in concordance with the state. Other northern states like New York and New Jersey passed gradual laws saying "when a slave is born July 4th upon reaching the age of 21, they are free." Slavery was thus becoming sectional. The gradual laws were eventually let go cutting slavery more diligently. In the South, there was a discussion of slavery becoming a necessary evil. Manumission also came into process where owners had the ability to free slaves. Jefferson requested that as America expands, slavery not expand in the Southwest, but his request did not pass. At the end of the Revolutionary war against Great Britain, the United States of America was created as an independent country. Thus began the roots of an entirely new American identity. Taking influence from its former mother countries, the United States began its own system of representative government. Furthermore, the American identity, shaped in the early years of 1775 to 1830, incorporated the ideals of agrarian farming, laissez-faire economic standpoint and capitalism. Religion, though not a main influence on the government, also continued to the shaping of this identity. While this largely benefited American citizens, another group in the United States was affected in other ways. African slaves and their American-born children were ignored by the Constitution, but the contradictory nature of the new American identity both led to greater freedom and more widespread bondages. When the American Civil War ended, all the enslaved African Americans obtained freedom from slavery. From then they were able to live their life in the land of the free. Slavery was a very controversial subject in the 1800’s. While some people did not see anything wrong with slavery and saw it as a part of the economic and social structure, other people felt that it was morally wrong and completely unethical. Even in the North, where slavery was nonexistent, there were people, like Lydia M. Child, who disapproved of the way African Americans were treated like second-class citizens. She believed that although the actual physical institution of slavery was not present, that was just because of climatic factors that did not really call for slaves, and the essence of slavery was still present. Another slavery-opposer, a poet named John Leaf Whittier, wrote a poem as a reaction to the attempted recapturing of an escapee expressing his disdain for these actions taken by the government. However, Thomas R. Dew clearly articulated that there are no moral complications with slavery because there is absolutely nothing in the bible that suggests that slavery is an immoral institution, while Whittier viewed it as immoral and unacceptable, and Child viewed just the differentiation made between African Americans and whites as unethical.…

Some were fighting for the Britain colonialists while others were fighting for American patriots in their struggle for independence. The slaves fought alongside their masters so that they could get human rights and freedoms enjoyed by other Americans.
