Apple Inc. De Andre Washington MGT/230 12/07/2010 Instructor: Maggie Ellison-Lohkemper

Apple Inc.
Apple has had many successes since its beginning. It has been ranked first place among Fortune magazine as World’s Most Admired companies. According to Sawayda, J. (2011), the brand is valued at more than $153 billion, making it the most valuable brand worldwide. Apple was intended to be a computer manufacturer though has became popular in consumer electronics such as Apple TV, iPods, iTunes, iPhones, iPads, and tablets. On the website found that Apple bases its success on “creating innovative, high-quality products and services and on demonstrating integrity in every business interaction” (Sawayda, 2011). According to Apple, the four main principles that contribute to its integrity are honesty, respect, confidentiality, and compliance. Apple has set standards for everyone in contact with the company as far as employees and suppliers. Apple also tries to ensure that the employees will conduct and display appropriate behavior in all situations. The company also has a code of business conduct that applies to all departments of operations including those overseas. With this code of business conduct Apple also has a helpline for the employees to report any type of misconduct so that the situations can be resolved. Along with code of business conduct the company also has a supplier code of conduct. This ensures that the suppliers are meeting the company standards and allows Apple to sign a contract with them though it allows Apple to end business with the supplier if they are not meeting the requirements.

The issues of social responsibility within a technology field usually fall within two areas: environmental and social, specifically labor. Somewhere there is a balance between product quotas and corporate social responsibility. Public opinion and clever communication often determines the outcome. In 2005 Apple began a supplier code, which stated Apple’s corporate stand on issues like employee workload, child labor, and proper wages. Since many of the local foreign companies who provide the manufacturing labor do not govern these issues, it becomes the responsibility of the company to provide the social restraints. Apple’s self-initiated audits report deficiencies in the supplier and demand reparations to those violations. If they are severe enough, Apple will terminate its involvement with the supplier. Apple announced that it fired one of its suppliers in the 2013 Supplier Responsibility Report when an audit revealed that the supplier had seventy-four underage worker violations (iClarified, 2013). Recently Apple increased its audits of its foreign manufacturing plants, since Apple products are mainly outsourced overseas (Torres, 2012). Now boasting a 92 percent compliance with a maximum sixty-hour workweek, Apple has bent to the public desire for a socially responsible company despite its intrinsic business production pressures (Apple, 2013).…

Apple’s position on its ethical and social responsibility should be in direct correlation to Apple 's reputation as it is to the credibility of its products Apple has clearly cited on many occasions the belief that accountability is paramount for them as well as their suppliers. Apple’s supplier code of conduct states their employees are empowered and provided with safe and ethical working conditions. It is their representation that their code goes beyond the industry standards, which should be expected of a company of its magnitude and success. Standing by its products and its impact on its presence in the local communities as well as reducing its negative impact on the environment are all stated in ethical policies and procedures set forth by Apple. In contradiction to its claims of going beyond industry standards it’s documented the business has fallen…

Apple is committed to ensuring that working conditions in Apple’s supply chain are safe, that workers are treated with respect and dignity, and that manufacturing processes are environmentally responsible. Apple’s suppliers (“Suppliers”) are obligated, in all of their activities, to operate in full compliance with the laws, rules, and regulations of the countries in which they operate. This Supplier Code of Conduct (“Code”) goes further, drawing upon internationally recognized standards, in order to advance social and environmental responsibility. Apple requires that Suppliers implement this Code using the management systems described below. The Apple Supplier Code of Conduct is modeled on and contains language from the Electronic Industry Code of Conduct. Recognized standards such as International Labour Organization Standards (ILO), Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), Social Accountability International (SAI), and the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) were used as references in preparing this Code and may be useful sources of additional information. A complete list of references is provided at the end of this Code. As an extension of the Code, Apple maintains a series of detailed Standards that clarify our expectations for compliance.…

Apple Inc. is one of the most successful companies in the United States and in the world. Apple Inc. is a multinational company that specializes in the manufacturing of electronic equipment like smartphones, software and computers. The company is well known to everyone for products like iPhone, Macintosh, iPad and iPod. Apple came into existence as the joint effort of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Wozniak was the mind behind the technology while Jobs was mind behind the marketing strategies. Apple Inc. was founded by Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs, and Ron Wayne on April 1, 1976 then was incorporated in 1977. The company was first established as Apple Computer Inc. Later on, the company founders decided to remove the world computer from its original name in order to show a future growth in different electronic products. The first product manufactured by this company was Apple I. “Apple used TV as the display medium, which was revolutionizing in its own self. Before that, no personal computers offered any sort of display. It worked much faster than other machines and provided an easy start up RAM and bootstrap code.” (Apple Inc., 2012) Building these machines was a problem because of the financial status of the company and because the location wasn’t appropriate. They managed to get a loan for US$250,000 through Mike Markkula who co-signed the bank loan. With money and new hope, the Apple II was created and it was specifically directed to households. ”Millions were sold well into the 1980s. A number of different models of the Apple II series were built, including the Apple IIe and Apple IIGS, which could still be found in many schools as late as 2005.” (Apple inc., 2012).…

The non-GAAP numbers of Apple Inc. reflect its economics better. Because, in the existing method of accounting, revenue and cost of goods sold are spread over the lifetime of the product (expected 24-months), while the costs incurred for engineering, sales, marketing and warranty are recorded immediately. This accurate recording of expenses while recognizing only a part of the cost of goods sold thus showed reduced margins.…
