Reading has always said to be the key to success, for it encourages learning. Yet, philosophers such as the German Arthur Schopenhauer state that reading too much actually is bad for the mind. I qualify these thoughts as I too agree that the excessiveness of reading may bond the mind’s creativity and freedom, yet feeding on other’s insights is also vital for a well-rounded mindset.
Too much reading indirectly forces the mind to dwell on the thinking of another man’s perspective. The mind is unable to produce original thoughts that spark individuality and pave a path for self’s own nature and character to emerge. Often times the influential writings of others make people to believe in the ideals, morals, and principles that the writers embrace. A uniform world would not be one of ingenuity and variant experiences. Rather as Schopenhauer stated, a man should be able to think on his own impulse and not by the sway of his favorite writer.
To advance educationally is profitable but to only dedicate self to one mission of learning is wasteful. Not to condone idle living but a recreational mind gives the brain time to rejuvenate. Constant strain on the brain wouldn’t make a person more educated but rather weaker mentally and able your mind immune to reckless and illogical thinking. The German philosopher also expressed that if a man not want to think, he pick up a book in his spare time when his thoughts engulf him actively because the constant practice makes a man foolish and stupid, than achieving his goal of becoming smarter.
In addition, when reading your mind is not always focused upon the topic of the book and so your mind has to be twisted and turned to properly focus your energy on fully understanding the message of the author. Learning by will and experience brings a fresh outlook on the information gained while learning by compulsion which is reading sticks to an already thought of attitude. When something such as learning is done by will, more effort is

Schopenhauer’s biggest fallacy is his belief that the human mind is a mindless machine, taking in information without any consideration and analysis of the information. However, the primary function of a book is to force a reader to analyze the ideas it has to offer. If everyone were to accept all the various ideas circulating in our world’s library, then there would be no basis for debate and no conflicting ideas. Yet there are debates and there are arguments. The analysis of the ideas present in books lead to agreement, disagreement, and neutrality. Nonetheless, the reader rests upon a conclusion after the process of reasoning and logic. Linda Elder and Richard Paul once pointed out, “One cannot be an educated person…

I want to talk about learning. But not the lifeless, sterile, futile, quickly forgotten stuff that iscrammed in to the mind of the poor helpless individual tied into his seat by ironclad bonds of conformity! I am talking about LEARNING - the insatiable curiosity that drives the adolescent boy to absorb everything he can see or hear or read about gasoline engines in order to improvethe efficiency and speed of his 'cruiser'. I am talking about the student who says, "I amdiscovering, drawing in from the outside, and making that which is drawn in a real part of me." I am talking about any learning in which the experience of the learner progresses along this line:"No, no, that's not what I want"; "Wait! This is closer to what I am interested in, what I need";"Ah, here it is! Now I'm grasping and comprehending what I need and what I want to know!"…

Reading was one of my preferred activities when I was a child. In high school, I started reading books about life to equip myself with knowledge about communication and social behavior. Nowadays, most people are flooded with a lot of modern technologies; reading hobby is being gradually buried by other interests but my feeling of reading and holding a book still has its own value in me. In “The Art of Reading”, Lin Yutang, a Chinese scholar says that reading makes people enjoy a rich spiritual life that those people who do not read books can’t obtain. The main point of this article is trying to say that you can 't force someone to read, you have to let them fall in love with their own style of book or author. After reading Lin Yutang’s essay and according to my experiences, I agree with his opinion that reading can not only enrich and provide people’s knowledge but also help readers learn and improve their intelligence through the authors ' experiences and judgment. Nevertheless, I disagree with his argument that when people try to read books with a purpose, they cannot improve their mind. I believe that whatever books you read with the aspiration to develop your knowledge, you can learn some lesson and increase your understanding.…

It was the English author Bacon who said that reading makes a ‘full man’. No one can question the truth of this saying, but it is the reading of good books alone which bestows upon us the maximum benefit. Of course, all books enrich our vocabulary, all of them make us wonder about, drifting from our daily routine into the vast universe of words written on a piece of paper at one point in history, but only those well written can capture our full attention and make us question the way we see life on its own.…
