Antigone Essay
Do you think your life is controlled by fate? Or you can make it whatever you want it to be. In the play Antigone written by one of the three great Greek tragedians Sophocles. Fate and free will are the two main ideas that lead in this play.
The first example of free will is the character Antigone, who decides to bury her brother and then takes the consequences for her decision. In my first quotation Antigone is talking to her sister Ismene about coming with her to go bury their brother even though it is against King Creon’s rules. “Ismene, I am going to bury him. Will you come?”(pg.191). This quote shows that Antigone made the choice of going out on her own to go out and burying her brother knowing the consequences she would face if she got caught. My next quote shows Antigone’s consequence of her actions from burying her brother. “She had made a noose of her fine linen veil and hanged herself” (pg.240). In the end Antigone had come to her fate and hanged herself.
The second major example of free will in the play comes when Creon decides to punish Antigone and refuses to change his mind, which causes him to lose his wife and son. In my first quote, Creon is stating Antigone’s punishment. “I will carry her far away out there in the wilderness and lock her in the living vault of stone” (pg.223). In this quote Creon had his mind set on locking both sisters up but after a little reasoning he let Ismene free and sent Antigone to The Vault of Living Stone. In my next quote I will be showing the consequences of Creon’s choices. In this quote Creon is talking about how he was a fool and killed his son and wife. “Lead me away, I have been rash and foolish I have killed my son and my wife” (pg.244).In this quote Haimon, Creon’s son killed himself because he learns of Antigone’s death and Eurydice Creon’s Wife kills herself because of Haimon’s death.
