In 2012 Sarah was being abused. Sarah is a 54- year-old captured elephant owned by a well known circus- “ The Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey.” This wild life creature that was put into captivity suffered with chronic infections and symptoms of arthritis and yet was forced to keep working. One of many times, after performing Sarah collapsed to the ground while being loaded into one of the railroad box cars, the circus didn't examine her or gave her the proper medical procedure.They just forced her back onto her feet and onto the box cars in order for her to perform once again the following week. Animal abuse in circuses and theme parks is an issue that has been going on for a long time but not until recently has it gained the attention needed. In many circuses, animals are trained through the use of intimidation and physical abuse. Former circus employees have reported seeing animals beaten, whipped and denied food and water, all to force them to learn their routines. Animals are taught that not obeying the trainer will result in physical abuse. Animal cruelty in circuses and parks is unacceptable and must be stopped. All kinds of animals are being mistreated for entertainment and they are not in the right environment , but we have the power to change. Tigers,Lions, Elephants and Monkeys are amongst the many animals that are beaten, whipped, dragged, and sometimes even electrocuted just for the sake of performing cruel and unnecessary tricks for entertainment. These animals do not voluntarily ride bicycles, stand on their heads, balance on balls, or jump through rings of fire. They don’t perform these and other difficult tricks because they want to; they perform them because they’re afraid of what will happen if they don’t. In Atlanta the Ringling Bros. trainers were brutally beating a tiger and had eye witnessed and yet went ahead and denied this act of cruelty to the PETA which is the largest animal rights organization in the world.
