Andrew Johnson Essay
The seventeenth president, Andrew Johnson was born on December 29th, 1808 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Andrew lived in a log cabin in North Carolina growing up with his brother and parents. Andrew's father was a hotel porter and bank janitor while his mother worked as a weaver and a spinner. Andrew Johnson's father, Jacob died when Andrew was three years old leaving him and brother, William with their mother, Mary leaving them in poverty. Soon after Jacob's death Mary remarried with Turner Dougherty. Andrew Johnson's parents were nearly illiterate and because of this Andrew as well had no basic knowledge of reading, math, or writing. At age fourteen Andrew's parents bound him and his brother as indentured servants to a tailor. They worked for food and lodging but 1824 they ran away, breaking their contract to the tailor. While in Greeneville, Andrew became a tailor and set up his own shop where he met his wife, Eliza. When Andrew first met Eliza he had very little knowledge and Eliza would educate Andrew and helped him make farmland and town real estate investments. When they got married they had five children. All three of their sons died and their two daughters stayed close to them and became public figures in the White House. Their oldest son died in 1863 after being thrown from a horse, the middle son suffered from alcoholism and died from affliction in 1869, and the youngest son died at the age of twenty seven. His wife became very ill with tuberculosis and stayed in her room mainly as a semi-invalid. Andrew Johnson got into politics by the frequent gatherings for political discussion in his tailor shop. He joined a debate club at a small college and later with the experience from the tailor shop and debate club along with the encouragement from his wife, Andrew entered politics. Sometimes, politically powerful men do unexpected things, LBJ was one of them. Before LBJ’s presidency he was living in an incredibly poor area and was dealing with poverty, this is the place he was born and raised, so coming to the White House was a big stretch of ways for him. LBJ wanted to sign the Civil Rights Act of 1964 because he wanted to do what he thought was right, what he believed, that’s where his principle decision comes into place. If principle decisions are based on strongly-held beliefs, then Cotulla teaching, Ignoring Southern Reaction, and Change of Heart show that President Johnson was motivated to sign by his OWN principle beliefs.…

President Andrew Johnson was charged with breaking the Tenure of Office Act, which was the law put in place by Congress that stated a president may not replace a government official who was appointed with the advice and consent of the Senate without the Senate’s approval (Ladenburg, 2007). Johnson wanted to fire Secretary of War Edwin Stanton who was appointed by Abraham Lincoln and vigorously disagreed with the president over Reconstruction being a Radical Republican at the time. There seem to be two ways that this incident could have gone, depending on which side one is on when dealing with the impeachment process. One side would be the case to acquit based on that Stanton was a member of the cabinet during Lincoln’s administration and could be fired by…

The theme of “Sonnet” by James Weldon Johnson is that without having the courage to push through fear, there will be no progress. The “Sonnet” was written in the late 1800s, where slavery and racism was at its peak. The author, James Weldon Johnson, was a civil rights activist. In the text, Johnson writes “And do not in thine own gross darkness grope” Painting this idea that the “gross darkness grope” he talks about is sadness, or fear, as we associate darkness generally with negative feelings. What this quote means though is that you should never be discouraged from doing what is right, gather the courage to push through the hard things, and reach your goal.…

This Presidential ticket is widely considered the worst in United States history. Many people are criticizing almost everything either candidate does. One one side you have a bigoted racist in Trump. On the other side, and marginally considered the better candidate of the two main parties is an untrustworthy, criminal in Clinton. What other options do you have? None, until you you look at the Libertarian candidate, Gary Johnson. I believe that, although unlikely, he has a chance to win. He would be a better president than Trump or Clinton because his stances on economics, immigration, and foreign policy make sense and would improve the U.S security and economy overall.…

When weighing the arguments for and against the impeachment of Andrew Jackson it is of the utmost importance to keep in mind the legal grounds for impeachment. The constitution states in Article 2, Section 4 that the president may be removed for “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” Impeaching a president is a serious decision and it is important to separate the morality or merits of an action taken by a president from its legality.…
