    Killer Angels Book Review

The novel I chose for the historical book review is called The Killer Angels, by Michael Shaara. This novel is about the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War, and it is written from the perspective of the people fighting while sharing their thoughts and feelings about the battle as it goes on. Although it is historical fiction, The Killer Angels centers around the Battle of Gettysburg, which, of course, really took place. While the strategy of the battle is factual, the dialogue is fictitious. The book starts with a Foreword that gives details of the armies and people involved. Four main chronological sections cover the days of Monday, June 29, 1863, through Friday, July 3, 1863, while switching between viewpoints Union and Confederate participants. An Afterword tells the reader what happens to several of the key characters. Even though a chapter is written from one commander's perspective, the author still allows you to see what some of the other characters in those scenes are thinking. Without this way of writing the novel, the reader wouldn’t truly be able to understand thoughts and opinions of the soldiers, so some of the choices wouldn't have made as much sense. Shaara included the arguments between characters about how to go about the attack, which gives the reader much more details about how complicated the few days of the battle were.…

Perry, who is the protagonist in the book, is from Harlem. He hasn’t always had it easy in his life. His mother is what is known as a “drunk”, and his father walked out on him and his family. He always had to supply for his family. Perry enlisted in the army because he could not afford to go to college and support his brother at the same time. When Perry is on his way to Nam he is excited but does not know what’s coming. He is a smart young adult who changes as he realizes the true meaning of war and encounters many near death experiences. When Perry sees deaths right before his eyes, he changes that he could never really be himself ever again. Perry grew a relationship with Lt. Carroll, when he gives Perry the jacket he had gotten from Saige to give to Kenny. When Lt. Carroll dies, it has a great impact on him and his platoon; they trusted him like no other. Also, Perry faces the changes as he wants to pray. He says,” … If he knew where the Lord’s Prayer was in the bible.” (Meyers 107). Perry had never really believed in praying, but as he enfaces the horror of war, he sees he has very small chance to live and wants to exceed his time. At the end of the novel Perry thinks,” That this was right, but it was only right from a distance… But when the killing started, there was no right or wrong except in the way that you were part of the killing” (Meyers 270). This states that Perry had seen the tragic ending to war and even though in the case he…

Lt. Audie L. Murphy’s name stands as one of the most prominent in American military history. He was a figurehead of leadership and the epitome of the seven Army Values (Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage). He was a model for every soldier to follow, one that overcame every odd that was ever against him and rose to conquer every challenge. In his personal memoir “To Hell and Back”, he expressed a very personal view of what it takes to embody these characteristics which would eventually encourage anyone who reads it. In the next few paragraphs I will expound on his leadership and analyze what it really takes to be a leader.…

In the novel Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers, Lieutenant Carroll, the first leader the soldiers have in the novel, said, “’My father used to call soldiers angel warriors, because usually they get boys to fight wars. Most of you aren’t old enough to vote yet’” (44). The extremity of the youth of the soldiers was unbelievable. Through all they went through, one would assume that only grown men who have experienced the realities of the world were capable of handling the hardships in the Vietnam War. Lieutenant Carroll, ironically, was seen as the wise, older leader of the squad but he was only twenty-three year old. Today, a twenty-three year old is usually fresh out of college and still immature and ignorant to the true meaning of life. The…

Losing a loved one is hard for any and every one, and coping with the loss is a big mission. In the Sweet Hereafter- a novel by Russell Banks- after a terrible bus crash occurs, resulting in the death of 14 children, many of the town’s people isolate themselves due to their loss and grief. Through the many different narrators, the author of this book shows how grief affects different people in different ways. One of the people affected by this tragic accident, Billy Ansel (also one of the narrators), copes with the loss by becoming an alcoholic. He doesn’t take anyone’s sympathy and stays in his home.…

Richie Perry, the novel's protagonist, enlists in the army mainly to escape his problems--a bad relationship with his mother, a lack of opportunity in Harlem, and an uncertainty about his future. He finds himself in the middle of a war that is more confusing and traumatic than the life he fled. Richie's understanding of his part in the war is unknown to him. This shows that Richie is ambiguous about himself. He also says, "I hadn't been too worried about going to Nam. From what I had heard, the fighting was almost over any way." This statement shows how credulous Richie can be. Later in the story he meats a guy named Jenkins. One night Richie and Jenkins go on night patrol with their squad. On their way back to the camp Jenkins steps on a land mine and is killed. Later Richie says "Seeing him lying there like that, his mouth and eyes open, had grabbed something inside my chest and twisted it hard." Him saying this shows that he is sympathetic about others.…

These people at the end of the day, it is unfortunate that they had to have their life taken from them but in the state of war, you don’t have time to worry about others because your life is on the line and you don’t want to be the one who gets killed. Many times in the book, scenes have been described showing how these men have died such as, “When he went ahh ooo, right then Ted Lavender was shot in the head on his way back from peeing.” (Pg.12) “His jaw was in his throat, his upper lip and teeth were gone, his one eye was shut, his other eye was a star-shaped hole….” (Pg.118) “Speaking of courage was written in 1975 at the suggestion of Norman Bowker, who three years later hanged himself in the locker room of the YMCA in his hometown of in central Iowa” (Pg.149) “He was under the mud and water, folded in with the war, and their only thought was to find him and dig him out and then move on to someplace dry and warm.” (Pg.155) “His face was suddenly brown and shining. A handsome kid, really. Sharp grey eyes, lean and narrow-twisted, and when he died it was almost beautiful, the way the sunlight came around him and lifted him up and sucked…

The Fall of Rebel Angels was a piece of art by Pieter Bruegel in 1562. The Fall of the Rebel Angels represents the war that happened in Heaven. Satan known as Lucifer was once an angel in Heaven. Then, he denied God’s creations of the angels. He then convinced many of his angels to go against God and get control over Heaven. This is what began the war in Heaven. I’ve always believed that some things are so complex that only God can see reasoning and benefit from them. A more than perfect example of this would be the heart wrenching life story of my beautiful friend Talia. As long as I’ve known Talia, she has had to go through more than most people in their entire lifetime; though everything, Talia stays strong and has hardly fallen weak. At the age of seven, Talia was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, an extremely rare and dangerous cancer. Talia is now twelve years young and still vigorously fighting her cancer. The Northridge earthquake of 1994 was a devastating event to the Cathedral of Saint Vibiana. After the devastating event, The Archdiocese of Los Angeles purchased a nearby site and they reconstructed a new cathedral called “Our Lady of the Angels.” Our Lady of the Angeles as well as The Gates of Paradise, both have doors that have significant importance behind the art work on them, leading to a warm welcome. Both the doors of Our Lady of the Angeles and The Gates of Paradise do not have many things in common. Although they are both related to religion the artwork on them are quite different. The fact that The Gates of Paradise came about during the Renaissance period, and the doors of Our Lady of the Angeles came about in the Modern period makes a difference between the art works on them.…

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom is a very good, insightful, and thought provoking book, and it’s main character, Eddie, made the book even more interesting. He has traits that are very present in the book; such as being kind-hearted, hard working, patient, and accepting. Eddie’s patience shines through when, in the middle of the book, he liked this girl but was patient in waiting for her. Eventually, she became his wife. Eddie also worked the same job for over 30 years, that he knew would get him nowhere in life, but would support him. This job was at an amusement park, Ruby Pier, just doing maintenance, and making sure the park ran smoothly. It was a very tedious job, doing the same things every day, every week, every year, unchanging except for the types of rides he had to maintain. Eddie worked as carnival maintenance from the time he got out of the military and his father died, right up until his own death. (His death was actually on the job.) Patience was a great trait for him to possess; when he arrived in heaven, Eddie had the time of forever on his hands.…
