COUNTRY REPORT

Background Information I am Jonalyn G. Saulan, a Training Assistant assigned in the Information Services Section of Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center VIII (ATI-RTC 8), located at Visayas State University Campus, Baybay City, Leyte.

ATI - RTC 8 is one of the 15 regional centers of Agricultural Training Institute, the training arm of the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture. It aims to provide extension services in agriculture and fisheries through trainings and capability building. The organization is led by a by the Center Director, and it is mandated to: “lead in the provision of e-Extension services in collaboration with the various agencies, bureaus and organizational units of the Philippine Department of Agriculture. An average of 20 typhoons is expected in the Philippines within a year. It can be recalled that in the last two years, two super-typhoons has drastically damaged the agriculture sector in Eastern Visayas (Region 8), wherein most areas people rely on farming and fisheries hence affecting the major source of livelihood. Consequently, drought has also become a national concern in the past months prohibiting agricultural activities in some of the agriculture-producing regions.

Primarily, I want to learn applicable strategies to address the issues I have previously mentioned. In the same way, I am looking forward to exchange ideas with co-participants with the similar interest as I have. On a personal aspect, I want to better understand the Japanese’ sense of discipline despite the calamities that they have encountered. It is a known fact that the victims of the calamities in Japan even religiously fall in line at a make-shift store to get their immediate supplies. I believe that this characteristics can also be seen on their farming activities.
