Problems persisted between the American colonies and Britain during 1774. From these problems, the thirteen colonies achieve their American independence in July 4th, 1776. While conflicts continue from 1774, there were several reasons that lead to the cause of the American revolutionary war. The American revolutionary war was caused by the stamp act, sugar act, and plenty of other ways Britain’s laws were used to take money from the thirteen colonies. After the French and Indian war in North America 1763, Great Britain faced a large debt. Parliament stated that the French and Indian war debt should be paid by the American colonies. The long war was claimed by parliament to be used to protect Americans from the French in Canada and how it’s…
After the French and Indian war the Americans were used to being neglected because the british needed all the troops they could get to fight the seven years. The Americans had experienced salutary neglect for so long that when the British came back the Americans did not like it. The British taxed the Americans with the sugar act and the intolerable acts without the representation deserved. This marked the beginning of the American Revolution.…
The American Revolution began in 1765 and ended in 1783. It started after the Seven Years’ War, which meant that Britain had to pay off debts and enforce more protection on America. The Revolution was caused by disagreements between the American colonists and the British government, or monarchy. The charges leveled in the Declaration of Independence against the King were absolutely valid and justified. Although the Americans lived better than the British, who lived in Britain, they were still treated unequally and had to pay for Britain’s decisions. The King’s decisions, regarding America, affected the colonists socially, politically, and economically. These decisions later created a tension and need for separation between the Americans and the British monarchy.…
The American Revolutionary War Begin in 1775 as an open battle between the combined thirteen colonies and Great Brittan. The colonies won their independence in 1783 by The Treaty of Paris. The colonists had come to the New World seeking political, religious, and economic independence. The geographical distance helped to create an exclusive identity for the colonies. Americans felt that they deserved all the rights that Englishmen had. The British felt that the colonies were created to be used in the best way that suited the crown and parliament, meaning mercantilism where the colonies exist to benefit the mother country.…
The term revolutionary means something that has or had a significant effect or sudden impact on the society and human behaviour. After and during the revolutionary war if a citizen was rich, white and a man he would have benefited from the revolutionary war, such as being able to enlist in the army willingly. However, if a citizen did not fall into that category they would have gained very little from the war. Contrary to G. Wood’s idea in the Radicalism of the American Revolution that patriots carried along and enforced the “Spirit of Equality” throughout the war (Document B), there was no equality shown to people of color, middle to lower class citizens and women. The revolutionary war did not make the lives of these individuals better in terms of race, class and gender. While the United States as a country was emancipated from Great Britain, the United States as a society was not…
In The Radicalism of the American Revolution (1991), Gordon S. Wood argues there were three distinct periods of social ideology in early American society, monarchy, republicanism, and democracy. While each era progressed chronologically, they were in no way distinct, with considerable ideological overlap occurring between them. The monarchy, which dominated American culture during the colonial period, was a series of hierarchical relationships denoted by various levels of dependency through personal ties. Republicanism, beginning in the 1740s, slowly chipped away at the fundamental principles of monarchical society. Revolutionary leaders highlighted the importance of classical virtues as changes in social demographics further disintegrated the traditional elements holding society together. The era of democracy, which Wood believes began after the defeat of the British, found its beginnings in the rhetoric of pre-revolutionary equality. This is the age when the revolutionary leader’s lofty ambitions of disinterested classical republicanism, was destroyed by the common man’s insistence on self-interested participation and a pursuit of personal gains.…
The class material influenced my understanding of American history by proving that the American Revolution was unquestionably progressive. Had the general population not broke free from Britain, they would not have gained the independence that we know today. The American Revolution helped form one of the best countries humanity has ever known. From now on when I hear American Revolution, I will feel a sense of pride and honor, because people fought for what they felt was right, and that is why I get to celebrate my independence every single year. I also understand that not all British colonists embraced Independence and the Revolution. This proves that Americans have always chosen their own course as individuals. Some chose to support the British…
Before the American Revolution occurred, the colonies had experienced a laissez-faire style of government imposed by the British. The British believed in the policy of salutary neglect, which refers to the policy of avoiding strict enforcement of laws meant to keep American colonies obedient to England. The American Revolution occurred due to mercantilist policies imposed by the British due to an effort to lower the tremendous amount of debt after the French and Indian War (1754-1763). The British imposed new taxes such as the Stamp Act (1765) which was a tax on printed items. The Americans then began the slogan “No taxation without representation” which became the cry of the American Revolution. Although men took the front-lines of the battlefield,…
The sugar act was passed in 1764. The Sugar act was when the British placed a tax on wine, sugar. This was done because the Britian needed more money to help them with the security for the colonists. The idea was to force the many colonists to sell…
By 1776, all 13 colonies had signed away their connections to Britain. America had declared independence from the mother country and started the Revolutionary War. The starting of the Revolutionary War severed all ties from the previous commitment to Britain, leaving the US to decide their new government and its rules by themselves. July 4th, 1776, the United States gained its independence from Britain, starting their own government that would attempt at getting representation for everyone. However, the Constitution was an aiding factor in the movement for more representation, this paper wanted a stronger central government and more power to the people. The Articles of Confederation are one area where it was weak, and the people didn’t have much power, most of the power went to the states. Therefore, the American Revolution helped the past citizens apply ideals that they wanted for their future government by showcasing everything wrong with the representation in the government they had before the revolution.…
Perhaps the most important revolutionary ideal known to the colonists was the formation of a republic. A republic is a government which is held by the people and their elected representatives, which has an elected president instead of a monarch. This idea of a republic, or a democracy, enticed many colonists, who were extremely upset with the tyrant King George III. When King George III repeatedly taxed the colonists without their consent, they grew angry with him, even though it wasn’t entirely him who was taxing them. It was Parliament as well, but it was easier for the colonists to blame one figurehead and King George III was the perfect target.…
The American Revolution was an extremely important event that helped shape the modern world, however, it was not a true revolution. According to Richard Price, a British Unitarian minister, "A true social revolution destroys the institutional foundations of the old order and transfers power from a ruling elite to new social groups." (Digital History ID 3222) During the 1700's, the American colonies had already been engaging in a form of self-government in their localities, which they largely fashioned in the English manner to which they were accustomed. At that time, the political leaders were the wealthy landowners and socially elite, such as Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, which reflected the same hierarchy of the British Parliament.…
The main causes of the American Revolution can be explained in the following three aspects: Society: In the long-term process of communication and integration in America, English became the common language in the colonies, and the American culture had gradually created. On this basis, the American nation began to take shape. The national consciousness started to wake up. In the 18th century Enlightenment was being spread in the American colonies, a number of prominent thinkers emerged, such as Franklin and Jefferson.…
George Washington helped us in many ways in the revolutionary war. Despite his losses he knew how to run the military. He was a really tough and brave man. Those two characteristics helped us in the military because you have to be brave and take risks t get rewards. Lastly toughness helped us out a lot. When our solders are sick or don't feel good they don't get to call in sick. They have to tough it out and if we were not tough enough then our soldiers would have gave up.…
The American Revolution embarked the beginning of the United States of America. A war that lasted eight years, 1775-1783, was able to grant the thirteen colonies the independence they deserved by breaking free of British rule. The war was an effect of the previous French and Indian War, which forced England to tax the American colonist, compelling them to rebel against parliament. From the 1760’s to 1775, many factors lead up to the American Revolution such as the various acts the British Parliament passed to pay the war debt, no representation in parliament, and the American people wanting to gain their independence. “No Taxation without Representation”, a slogan used by the American colonist, was the most important cause of the colonists declaring war for their independence on the British government.…
