Creation
• Sir Syed Ahmad Kahn was the finder
• Came from Muslims believing that Congress didn’t fully represent them but more towards the Hindu faith
• Some of the beliefs was that the intellectual class wasn’t represented
• Hindu’s were now treating Muslims with little respect and Congress sis nothing about it
Simla delegation - 1906
• Following the creation of a Muslim-majority province the Hindu’s outrage had convinced Muslims that when a vote was going to be held they would be overwhelmed by the Hindu majority.
• Lord Minto, the new viceroy, had indicated that reforms would be taken into consideration. After this announcement the majority of
Muslims decided that they had to get their own representative group.
• Some historians think Minto wanted a Muslim group to counterbalance the growth of Congress
Indian Council Acts - 1909

Lucknow pact - 1916
• An agreement reached between the Indian National congress and the
Muslim League at the joint session of both the parties, held in
Lucknow, in the year 1916.
• Muhammad Al Jinnah, then a member of the Congress as well as the
League, made both the parties reach an agreement to pressure the
British government to adopt a more liberal approach to India and give
Indians more authority to run their country, besides safeguarding basic Muslim demands.
Khilafat movement founded - 1919
• A movement set up by Indian Muslims to support the Sultan of
Turkey, who was regarded by many Muslims as their Caliph, or spiritual leader
• Muslim leaders joined in with Gandhi in mobilising the masses for the
1920 and 1921 civil disobedience in response to the Amritsar massacre and Rowlatt acts.
• Gandhi endorsed the movements and brought the weight of Hindu opinion behind what was a solely Muslim
