THE STRANGER

"What is it, indeed, the absurd man? The one who, without denying it, does not make anything for the eternal. It is not that the nostalgia is strange to him, but rather he prefers his anger and his reasoning. The first one teaches him to live without appeal and to be satisfied with what he has; the second teaches his limits. Sure of his freedom to term, of his rebellion without future and of his perishable conscience, his adventure continues in the time of its life. The field is in him, his action that subtracts in all opinion except his. A bigger life cannot mean for him another life. That would be dishonest". The novel The Stranger, based on Sisyphus's Myth, shows clearly Camus existentialist point of view of life

He is so detached from that world, that not even his mother's death creates a sentiment on him. When he returned home after the burial, it occurred to him that anyway one more Sunday was over that his mother was buried then, that he was going back to work, and that, really, nothing had changed. This leads to think in what the moral and the justice is if there is really one. In "The absurd man", Camus says that you cannot instruct on the moral. "I have seen people act badly with a lot of moral and I check every day that the honesty doesn't need rules". I could observe this in the role of the prosecutor. In my opinion, he is the one in search of something, maybe a "value" from his pint of view. The prosecuting attorney is a man with a fiery tongue and powerful presence. He attacks Meursault's character by persistently bringing up his indifference to his mother's death and his relationship with Marie so soon after her funeral. The prosecutor ultimately wins, for Meursault is convicted of premeditated murder and is sentenced to a public execution. This is the oral that Camus

    The opening of “The Stranger” Meursault is informed of his mother’s death. Meursault tells us: “I got a telegram from the home: “Mother deceased. Funeral tomorrow. Faithfully yours.” That doesn't mean anything.” (page 3); a very strong statement to set the mood of this chapter. When he finished reading the telegram his first thought is: “That doesn't mean anything.” this can give the reader the idea that Meursault is disconnected, cold, and perhaps that he may have never been very close to his mother.     When Meursault is talking to his lawyer, he is ridiculed for saying that he was ‘tired and sleepy’ on the day of Maman’s funeral, “He thought for a minute. He asked me if he could say that that day I held back my natural feelings. I said, ‘No, because that’s not true.’ He gave me a look, as if he found me slightly disgusting” (Camus 63). A man vs. man conflict is created by Meursault’s honesty and his lawyer;s aversion to his answer. Meursault’s own lawyer expresses his hostility towards Meursault, and therefore can no longer objectively and fairly defend Meursault. In addition to his lawyer’s hostility, Meursault experiences condemnation from the Magistrate after revealing he is an atheist, “… the judge would lead me to the door on his office, slap me on the shoulder and, and say to me cordially, ‘That’s all for today, Monsieur Antichrist.’ I would then be handed over to the police” (Camus 68). By using a critical tone to an ideal that all people should have faith, and those who don’t are wrong, the magistrate created an unjust prejudice against Meursault. Similiarly, during Meursault’s trial, the funeral director is testifying about the events at Maman’s funeral. “… and said that I hadn’t wanted to see Maman, that I hadn’t cried once and that I had left right after the funeral without paying respect to her grave…the prosecutor exclaimed, ‘Oh no, that is quite sufficient!’… I had this stupid urge to cry, because I could feel how much these people all hated me” (Camus 86).     The tragedy of it is that we are never truly conscious of the absurd, and in those moments when we are conscious of the absurd, we experience the greatest moral downfall imaginable. The only way to live in this world is to live in contradiction. Once we can accept that the world we live in is absurd, we no longer need to live for hope or have this dying need for purpose (Tomo, 2013).
