At the same time it must be admitted that the product Beecher Stowe has fulfilled its tasks. Moreover, sentimental, at first glance, the preaching of the author, as shown in American history XX - early XXI century, not surviving examples of romantic utopianism. Milestones accretion intuitions…
At the start of the 20th century, the United States were experiencing many changes in the ways that their economics and politics operated. After the Civil War, Restoration, and the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era was a time the United States could establish the principles of the country and begin to build what America is today,. With large monopolies running the nation's economy, such as those run by J.P. Morgan, Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Vanderbilt, many people sought Reformation and wanted to fix the problems of the country. The reformers, or Progressives, wanted to fix the corruption in the government, trusts, poor living and working conditions, and morals in the country. They also fought for conservation of forests, and the rights of blacks, women, and immigrants. The Progressives brought reformation to a national level. The efforts they made lasted nearly twenty years, and came with many successes and limitations.…
The United States during the early decades of the nineteenth century sought to reform the United Staes and expand democratic ideas. There were many major reform movements that looked to expand democratic ideas, which include: establishing free (tax supported) schools, improving the treatment of the mentally ill, controlling or abolishing the sale of alcohol, gaining equal rights for women, and abolishing slavery. The reformers went out to “reform” the time period to greater the democratic ideals of the United States and make it a better place to live for the people, by the people.…
First reform in this time period was the American temperance movement. This was crucial because it was the first organized group to deal with alcohols impact on society and actually focused on the personal health and safety of American citizens. This was not the grandest of America’s issues though; in the early 1800s women had no rights outside of their household. Women could not vote, they could not own property, all they were good for was tending to house work as the men worked. This is often looked at with the transcendentalist movement of the 1830s, as they both revamp early family life and loosen the strict standards for women. In the 1800s slavery was a huge debate that divided our nation into pro-slavery and abolitionists. Many problems arose from this.…
In the seventeenth century, there were two different versions of utopia. When a person hears the word utopia, a different thought will come to each different person’s mind. A utopia can be anything, as long as it brings joy to the specific person. In Colonial America, all people went over to the new world with a fantasy of their perfect place. In fact, two very important historical figures had extreme views on North America. While John Smith viewed The New World as new land where he could make limitless money, John Winthrop viewed it as a City Upon a Hill in which he could bring glory to god. According to Creveour’s observations in 1769, Smith’s vision seemed to prevail.…
Socrates philosophized that in order for a democratic system to operate correctly free of corruption and for the people, the voters must be educated. Andrew Jackson also used this argument against the southern states during the nullification crisis, and the states said that they have no representation. Jackson stated that the people vote for their representatives, therefore, they were represented. Horace Mann was an educational reformer from Massachusetts. He also believed that a good public education system was a way to cut crime and create informed citizens. One of his beliefs was that schools should allow students of different backgrounds to attend their school. This theory encompasses the belief that all men are created equal. He also believed that education should be non-sectarian, which is inferred to by Thomas Jefferson in the 1st amendment. The Brook Farm Association was a utopian society experiment in 1841. The leaders of the experimental community sought to create a perfect society, in doing this they created a constitution. Stated within this constitution, is that an education would be provided, as said, "In order to more effectually promote the great purpose of human culture...the benefits of the highest physical, intellectual and moral education". The constitution also goes on to say that providing the education will help to create a more efficient industry and help make people be…
During the Progressive Era, pressure from labor, suffrage, and conservation movements profoundly changed the course of American history. Many of the reformers' ideas clashed with the male-dominated, capitalist economic structure present at the turn of the century. Some of the intended reforms opposed the current system, but the level of social unrest necessitated change. Businessmen and activists alike initiated the reforms during the Progressive Era. Government, due to the intention of calming the common man and quieting the seemingly more and more vocal middle class, supported them. In the final analysis, from the year 1900 to 1920, Progressive Era reformers were successful in bringing about reform to the United States.…
Throughout history there have been many reform movements that have changed the country which they took place in. During the first half of the nineteenth century the reform movements in America brought lasting change by causing the citizens of America to rethink their views on many important issues brought about by the economic and social disruptions of the market revolutions. First of all, the Temperance Movement helped to make a lasting change on the dangerous amounts of alcohol that the average citizen consumed. Secondly, the Woman's Rights Movement gave women many rights which they had not previously had. Finally the Abolitionist Movement caused a division in the country that led to armed conflict. Through all of these reform movements the United States have been forever changed.…

As the United States found conflict with the West as they continue to expand more further to West, the United States also found conflict within their nation with so many reform movements that were occurring in their nation. These reform movements lead many leaders to democratic ideals in the United States. Although not every reform movement was efficient, some reform movements that occur in the United States were more convenient to many citizens and immigrants. Some of the reform movements that sought to expand democratic ideals. For example, the political reform movement specifically the women’s rights reform, which gave more legal and political rights for women, after the Seneca Falls Convention was very convenient to the gender female. Also, another reform movement that impacted the social lives of many was the reform for Abolition, which like many leaders like Frederick Douglass opposed slavery and wanted it to end. In the result, the slaves would find themselves with freedom. Lastly, other reform movements that influenced the social lives of many were Utopian Communities and Education. Although the time may lead one to think that most of the reforms were based on pessimistic views of human nature, most were based on views of optimism. Take the issue of education, for example. The public school movement was designed to better educate our nation's youth. Horace Mann, the main advocator of this movement, created a public school system in Massachusetts. This system became the model for the rest of the United States. This is a positive aspect of human nature based on the fact that society wanted to improve itself. Another reform movement during this time was the establishment of utopian communities. Beginning with the New Harmony settlement of Indiana…

From 1790 to 1860 reforms emerged in the United States in attempt to create a more advanced society. Many of the movements that were attempted failed due to either entrenched social conservatism or weaknesses in the movements themselves. New religions started to emerge based on Christianity, but shaped to their preferences. Along with new religions were Utopias that were part of cooperative, communistic, or “communitarian” nature. The temperance movement started to rise in 1826 and societies tried to ban liquor. The liquor caused a decrease in the efficiency of labor because most men drank. Women gathered together to gain themselves more rights and delete the “cult of domesticity” out of men’s minds. American reform movements of the early nineteenth century had many successes and failures under the subjects of new religious groups along with utopias, temperance, and women’s rights.…
A life of freedom, equality, and opportunity, more commonly known as the American Dream, motivates people every day to achieve personal happiness and material comfort. John Winthrop, Judith Sargent Murray, and Ben Franklin encouraged this lifestyle by writing to the people of the United States explaining in their own way how this utopian lifestyle can be achieved. Winthrop’s “A Model of Christian Charity” was written on board the Arbella on the way to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He inspired the people by saying that if they united in love, they would be blessed by God and have the power to impact the world. Murray’s “On the Equality of Sexes” sparked controversy as it shone a light on how women were treated in society and education. She is one of the first at the time to speak about the intelligence of women and the potential they could have if treated as equals to men. Franklin’s “The Way of Wealth” emphasizes the importance of thrift and warns against living a sloth-like life. The American Dream can be achieved through love, equality, and hard work.…
“Idealism, the vision of a better social order, not hunger, inspired these men... There is sometimes a tendency, perhaps an inclination, to forget that the Pioneers commenced business with the purpose of pioneering the way to a new and better social order.... Without an ideal there would have been no Co-operative Movement” (Bonner, 1961).…
