Advantages and Disadvantage Television
WHAT ARE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TELEVISION ?

Television is an important form of communication and has been for many years. Television brings important historical events, both positive and negative, directly into our homes. People don’t just read about current events, they experience them in real time.
Television can also be a fine teaching tool – there are many television shows on the air that are informative and educational. The right television shows can teach our children about morals and values as well as right from wrong. Educational television is not only for children however; Public television as well as cable television channels such as National Geographic and The History Channel serve as learning tools for adults. In fact many colleges and universities use local channels to provide distance learners the opportunity to attend lectures given on television.
Along with the advantages listed above there are also disadvantages to television. First the same proliferation of new channels that provides additional educational opportunities also provides opportunities for children to be exposed to more inappropriate content than ever before. It is not uncommon for children to have access to movies and programs intended to be viewed only by mature audiences. While technology has been put into place to help conscientious parents censor the channels and shows their children can access, these methods are far from fool proof and they are only as effective as the parents who choose whether or not to utilize them. This unfettered access to adult material appears to manifest itself in a variety of different ways but most people would agree today’s children are more aware of adult themes (such as sex and violence) at an earlier age than ever

When it came to Neil Postman who talked about how television and movies can also double as being educational, I would have to agree with him. There are many shows on television that prove to be a good way to learn about different aspects of life that one may not have known about before. For example, the food network is where one would turn in order to learn more about a certain food dish, while a channel like the history channel would be used to learn about past times and other countries. Then, there are children’s shows like Dora the Explorer, that help children learn Spanish just by watching television for a mere thirty minutes. Postman made it clear that the television was not the only answer to educating people. There still needs to be a classroom environment in order to ask questions and socialize with other people.…

Television is a useful tool. What if a strike was going at the local Savemart? We would not know unless we had a television, a friend who watches television, or went there in person. The news will tell you just that and the weather for the next week so it doesn’t rain while you’re swimming. While watching the National Geographic channel one can travel the entire African Savannah or the Australian Outback or even the deep murky trenches of the Pacific Ocean. It makes geography and biology projects a lot easier. When my Mother first came to America she couldn’t even say hello, but after watching shows like Sesame Street and The Price is Right she began to make brief conversation then it escalated from then.
