Achilles Vs Beowulf Research Paper
Beowulf is a strong hero to the Anglo-Saxon’s, he fought and killed Grendel, which is the first of three monsters killed by Beowulf. () As a result of Grendel’s death, Grendel’s mother comes to avenge the death of her son. () Whereas Achilles is a head-strong war hero of the Trojan War. He killed Hector, prince of the Trojan’s. () Achilles knowing as a result of the death of Hector, he would have the fate a a young death. () Both of these heroes are noble men to their people.
Both Achilles and Beowulf were brave and courageous. Beowulf with his super human strength defeating monsters that killed many, yet still won. () Then there is Achilles knowing what his fate holds if he avenges the death of his best friend, Proclus, but still did it anyway. () These heroes used their advantages in war. Beowulf had tactics when it came to war and knew the strength he held. () Achilles, on the other hand, has a large amount of anger. He uses his anger in war to his advantage, () Both of the heroes use their strengths to be known as the hero they are.

Beowulf is more like a modern hero in society due to his ability to put others before himself. The whole reason he fought was to protect others. He killed Grendel and his mother to protect the Anglo-Saxons. () He also does not accept fate which is one of the main qualities in heroes today. Beowulf is even tempered; he does not change his mind repeatedly. () He is also willing to sacrifice his men to protect the people. Once Grendel’s mother seeks revenge for her son’s death, Beowulf wholeheartedly accepts the challenge by saying, “let us immediately set forth on the trail of this troll-dam” (Heaney 97). Though Beowulf’s willingness to defeat Grendel’s mother is just a singular example, throughout the entire novel, Beowulf acts on courage whatever the challenge. Achilles is similar to Beowulf in this particular personality trait.
