Abortion

In a society of depression, there is now, very little money, and a sad life for a woman who is pregnant all of the time. The rough estimate of pregnancies that occurred in 1931 is 250,600. The rough estimate of abortions in 1931 was 95,700. Women, back then, were stuck in their house to take care of the daily household chores, take care of the kids, and tend to every one of their husband’s sexual desires. This resulted in many pregnancies that women could not afford to have financially or physically. There is a simple solution to prevent unwanted pregnancy; do not have sex. It is obviously understood that sex happens, but aborting the baby should never be the solution to an unwanted pregnancy. “There seemed no sense to it at all, no reason for such waste of mother life, no right to exhaust women’s vitality and to throw them on the scrap-heap before the age of thirty-five” (Margaret Sanger 202). Abortion is a controversial topic worldwide. It is not hard to type abortion into a search engine and find arguments regarding pros and cons of the cruel procedure. So this is exactly what I did. I typed the word “abortion” into a search engine and I then clicked the suggested website at the top of the page. This website was titled “10 abortion arguments.” A lot of good points are made on this website that are clearly against abortion. For every argument against abortion, however, there is a contradicting argument for it as well. For example, there was an argument that stated, “An abortion can result in medical complications later in life; the risk of ectopic pregnancies doubles and the chance of a miscarriage and pelvic inflammatory disease also increases. This argument is contradicted by the one that states, “Abortion is a safe medical procedure. The vast majority of women-88%- who have an abortion do so in their first trimester. Medical abortions have less than 0.5% risk of serious complications and do not affect a woman’s health or future ability to become pregnant or give birth.” (womenissues.about.com) When you further your research, however, you do find that medical problems occur for future births after having an abortion. The responsible choices would be to either use protection or to not put yourself in a situation where an unwanted pregnancy can occur. When “Awakening and Revolt” was written in 1931, abortion was illegal. Thousands of women died because they did not want to bear and infant and attempted to terminate the child’s life by themselves, or with an unprofessional approach such as taking drugs or using the questionable facilities that were known in the community for cheap abortions. Margaret Sanger described it as, “(women) going into questionable offices well-known in the community for cheap abortions. I asked several women what took place there, and they all gave the same reply: a quick examination, a probe inserted in the uterus and turned a few times to disturb the fertilized ovum, and then the woman was sent home” (Margaret Sanger 203). In 1973, the Supreme Court made the decision that gave women the choice to have an abortion. In the long run, this ended up saving thousands of women’s lives by them because they no longer had to go to cheap clinics for an abortion. This decision, however, should have never occurred in the first place. I have a hard time understanding how you cannot simply choose to not have sex. If becoming pregnant in a problem the simply do not do the action which cause a pregnancy to happen; it is as simple as that! “I could now see clearly the various social strata of our life; all its mass problems seemed to be centered around uncontrolled breeding” (Margaret Sanger 208). Both sides of abortion could be argued endlessly. I agree that if the child can not be cared for then, abortion is okay, but that is also the purpose of adoption. There are so many eager couples, who would love to have a son or daughter, who could provide for them and them the life that they may not have been able to live. The reason may be that there is not enough financial support of the child was not wanted at that time. If the alternative route for your unborn child can be a good life, why would you not choose that over death?

You will know you gave the greatest gift of all- a child, to a couple whose hop and dream was a baby to love. If you choose abortion, there is no baby to think of, no smile, no little fingers of toes to remember. You have only the memory that you ended your baby’s life. Instead of feeling good about how your pregnancy ended, you may feel sad and empty. But you can never go back and give that child life!” (abortionfacts.com) In the end, it can be summed up as your decision as a woman, or as a man, who is going to making the decision about sex and looking for the facts on what could happen. It is your decision to use protection and to be as precautions as possible, or to just not have sex at all. But if the unfortunate thing of an unwanted, or unexpected, pregnancy occurs, it then becomes your responsibility to make sure that the child is not brought into the world if it cannot be cared for. If you do not see adoption as an alternative, then it looks like your decision will be abortion. Unfortunately, that is a sad decision that you and your significant other will have to live with for the rest of your lives.
