Ability Grouping
Ability grouping is a widely spread practice used among many educators today. Between-class grouping is by far one of the most commonly used types of ability grouping. "The goal of this grouping is for each class to be made up of students who are homogeneous in standardized intelligence or achievement test scores" (Snowman, Biehler). In this type of grouping, the schools separate their students into different classes or courses. "Between-class ability grouping is where students spend most of the day in ability groups and use the same or similar curriculum substantially adjusted to their ability levels" (Ability Grouping 3). "For example, in elementary schools, students from the same grade levels may be grouped by ability for reading and mathematics instructions" (Ability Grouping 1). The students are broken down into different achievement levels: high, middle, and low.
Although the ability-grouped students learn the same amount as those students who are in mixed ability classes, there are a number of positive and negative effects between-class ability grouping has on the students and their teachers. This type of grouping has a more positive effect on the high level students. "It is known that the top 10 to 15% of these students benefit from this grouping" (Considering Individual Differences). For those students in the middle and lower levels, there is no proven effective change in their achievement level. Because of this problem, the achievement gap between high and middle to lower level students is now wider than before.
In pertinence to certain subjects such as reading or mathematics, between-class ability grouping can produce greater achievement gains than mixed-ability groups. However, a common problem with between-class grouping is that the students in one group have little or no contact with others students outside their group.     Typically within-class grouping would come into play during math and reading lessons. Depending on my class size and need, I would divide my class into three to four colored named groups. These groups would consist of below average students in one group, average ability students in a second group and above average in the third group. Depending on each group would determine what kind of work they received. The above average students would receive lesson work based slightly above what is currently being taught. They would also be expected to work out the problems with little to no help from the teacher. This allows the teacher to better focus on the other two groups. The average ability group would receive work based on the current lesson with moderate interaction from me. They also would be expected to work together to help learn from one another. The third group being below average would require the most attention. They would also receive work that was slightly behind the current lesson but in line to catch them up to the current lesson. I would spend time with them each day explaining the work and answering questions. The pace for this third group would vary but I would try to keep it at a brisk rate so that they have the chance to catch up with the rest of the class.…

    One of the ways that the learning can be differentiated is through the support given to the children. This could be whether or not they get adult support as well as the support offered through the use of worksheets and resources. Resources that could be implemented in order to ensure that lower ability students are still able to progress in their learning include, key word banks, work sheets with additional support e.g sentence starters and flashcards. By implementing these resources and support systems it allows the lower ability students to achieve the same lesson objectives just with additional guidance.     This was further complicated by wide range of abilities within the p7 group, for example some pupils were working on first level Mathematics with the majority on second level. In all the classes that I spent time in during my placement children were arranged in ability groups for curriculum areas like Mathematics and Literacy, with differentiation encouraged in planning to account for this. Differentiation can be carried out in variety of ways for example, by task, output, level of support or by classroom management and consideration of learning environment (STEC, n.d). By using a variety of these approaches to accommodate differences amongst all learners, children with additional support needs should not feel excluded (Florian & Black-Hawkins, 2011). Flavey et al. (as cited by STEC, n.d) also recommend that such differentiated approaches should be kept simple and used sparingly to avoid limiting a pupil’s possibilities. On placement, children with additional needs were also withdrawn at times for one to one or small group support.     At Park Elementary, a variety of assessments are used to evaluate the performance of the students. A DIEBELS Assessment is used to evaluate our students’ performance in reading for grades kindergarten thru fourth. The test is administered three times a year including the months of September, January, and May. The teachers analyze and use the results of the DIEBELS testing to place students in three different reading groups during reading instruction. The groups are divided by using a color coding system of red, yellow, and blue. Students are placed in the blue group (mastery) if they are advanced in reading, yellow (strategic) if they are on grade level, and red (intensive) if they are below grade level in reading and need intensive reading instruction. Teachers are required to differentiate instruction during the time that students are divided into the three “flexible” groups. Benchmarks scores, Unit testing scores, and results from LEAP and ILEAP scores are utilized to evaluate the performance in the upper grades. These scores are also used in order to determine group placement and provide differentiated instruction in reading for upper grade levels as well. In addition, differentiated instruction is determined in all grade levels for math by students’ weekly test grades, benchmark scores, and in the upper grade levels, ILEAP and LEAP scores are used to determine placement of students in groups and to provide differentiated instruction. The data from all of the assessment tools are analyzed and used for school improvement by providing us with a guide or map to show us which skills or subjects we are mastering and which skills we need improvement on.     Through my experience there been different levels of twice exceptions. From a student that I had in borrow who was a six grader. He was very gifted but he had high degree of emotional problems and so he did very well in a small class room setting. I had about 12 to 15 students in beginning in my GT-Elective class and then midway through the semester there were about 10 to 12 additional students put in the class room. When that happened I noticed he acted out more and he showed violent behavior. He was throwing chairs across the room and had a hard time dealing with other students in the classroom other personalities with distractions. When we were small groups he did very well and he was able to interact well; you know in small groups. But as soon as we got to be larger it just, there were so many other factors in the classroom that upset him and so lot times we had to call his case worker and she had to take him to another room.…
