Group Selection:
I selected an Alcoholic anonymous meeting. I wanted to see what they do and how it works for people who are alcoholics. I searched alcoholic anonymous meetings in Fresno and found this community service group online at http://fresnoaa.org/home/
Purpose of the group:
In Alcoholic Anonymous meeting, people gather from community in groups to help one another achieve and maintain abstinence from alcohol. These meetings are free and anyone can come who is serious about stop drinking. These groups read from “Bible”, share their personal stories about addicted to alcohol, introduction of new members to groups, celebrating members’ sobriety and also discussion of 12 step program which is related to drinking problems. All members are encouraged to “work” the 12-step program, they have to understand and apply each step in their lives before proceeding to the next. These members help other people in quitting drinking. This is a socialization group.
Types of groups:
Self-help group: This group of people help themselves by talking about their fears and other problems to meet their goal in their lives. Also, by discussing their problems they can receive comfort and advice from other group members who had same experience. (Townsend, 2012)
Supportive group: This group is focused on therapeutic communication, support and interactions among people. This group supports other members in the group by encouraging them to stop drinking. Therapeutic communication and interaction is very important in this group because you have to motivate the group in positive way by giving examples and talking to the person. (Townsend, 2012)
Three phases of group:
Phase 1: Beginning phase: In this phase, they will do a little orientation of the group and purpose of this meeting. They discuss goals of the meeting and Introduction of the lead members of the group with stories of their lives related to alcoholism.
