Objective:
Students will learn about the five finger rule for choosing the right book during Read to Self

Estimation Duration: 30 minutes

Auditory Learners: Provide books with more complex language and sentences
Tactile/Kinesthetic Learners: Provide textured or hardbound books

Gather the children at the carpet area. Ensure students are quiet and are ready to listen for instruction.
2. Pass out the Five Finger Rule worksheet.
3. Ask the students to follow along as you read the worksheet.
4. Explain to the students we will be using the five finger method to choose the right book during read to self portion of the day.
5. Explain to the students how to pick a book. First they open the book to any page and put one finger up for each word you don’t know. If it 0-1 the book is too easy, if its 1-2 it’s a perfect choice, if it’s 3-4 give it a try, and if it’s more than 5 it may be too hard.
6. Model this portion by picking a book from your classroom library and asking students what words they can read on the page you choose. After determining how many words the class can read, have the kids use the chart to determine if the book is too hard, too easy, or just right according to the number of words they could read.
7. Instruct the students to use this method when going to the library or book shopping during read to self
8. Have students get up from the carpet and either go to the classroom library or the school library and practice picking books using the five finger
