3 Cups Off Tea
“Educate a boy, and you educate an individual. Educate a girl, and you educate a community,” said Greg Mortenson is his book Three Cups of Tea. Three Cups of Tea is a book about a man building schools for girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan. A 60-minute report from April 2011 claims that the book contains lies. Greg Mortenson, The CAI, and supporters all responded to the 60-minute report, defending Mortenson. There is proof that Greg Mortneson built schools but nobody but him knows if the story behind making the schools are true.
The 60 minutes report claim that the lies started once Mortenson claimed that he entered the village of Korphe after his fail climbing the K2 (60 Minute). John Creakier “It’s a beautiful story and it’s a lie (60 minutes)”. John Krakauer spoke to one of Mortenson’s friend who attempted the K2 with Mortenson and said that Greg never heard of Korphe until a year later (60 minutes). In Mortenson’s response to the report he says how the first village he visited was korphe even though there are 3 sources that claim that he did not step foot into korphe until a year after his attempt of the K2 (“Jacket Copy”). Mortenson also claimed that he was kidnapped by the Taliban and held for 8 days (“Jacket Copy”). 60 minutes spoke with the man who claimed to be one of the kidnappers and the man claimed that everything was not true and that Mottelson made it up just to sell his book (60 minutes). Even after the man saying that the kidnapping did not happen, Mottelson told 60 minutes that he was “detained” for 8 days and held against his will (“Jacket Copy”). Mortenson and the men that were Taliban’s in Mortensons’s book are the only ones that know the truth. When 60 Minutes interviewed the Central Asia Institute they asked questions about where the money comes from and how it is spent. The CAI attempts to spend 85 % of their money on the schools in Pakistan but 60 mintues discovered that only 41 % actually goes to the schools (“Responses”). The rest

“Failure,” chapter one, in “Three Cups of Tea,” by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin, tells about a man’s compassion and determination through life, and the obstacles that would ultimately lead to his failure. Greg Mortenson was born into a compassionate family that greatly cared for the welfare of others. Being a kind man who loves his family, he maintains a close relationship with his sister, Christa, who suffers from frequent seizures. Mortenson, twelve years her senior, appointed himself her protector. After his sister’s untimely death, Mortenson sets out on an expedition to scale the second highest Summit in the world, and in order to honor his sister’s memory by leaving her necklace at the peak. During his journey to the top, Mortenson without hesitation assists in the exhausting rescue of a fellow mountaineer, Etienne Fine. After the rescue the severe and treacherous conditions had left him weak and unable to go on. Due to this selfless act Mortenson is forced to give up his dream to reach the top, when he was merely 600 meters away. He goes on to describe his experience as agonizing, his deep wounds from the rescue unbearable, and his painful night of sleeping on jagged uneven rocks alone. He States, “It was his body that had failed, he decided, not his spirit, and every body had its limits” (16). Mortenson’s restrictions had altered his determination; and though he had failed he had learned a lot about his own mental and physical limits in…

Throughout history, historians have spun events in order to alter and adjust others’ views on the event. This is especially true during Colonial times and the time leading up the American Revolution. During this time, information about the colonist’s events was passed on through word of mouth. One such man that was notorious for this was George Robert Twelves Hewes. Hewes was a Boston shoemaker, who at the age of twenty-eight witnessed four of his closest friends shot to death by The British red coats; he also participated in many of the key events of the Revolutionary crisis.1 Hewes recollections of the events that took place were passed along in the monograph The Shoemaker and the Tea Party: Memory and the American Revolution by Alfred F. Young. His recollections of the dumping of the tea into the harbor lead the reemergence of how significant the dumping of the tea was for the United States of America. However, stories of Hewes were also spun in order to alter the views of others.…

The institution of education in many regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan is virtually nonexistent. Many girls don’t have access to schools (Stones into Schools p.4) and those that do usually don’t graduate from high school. While Greg Mortenson’s Stones into Schools and the documentary The Miseducation of Pakistan deal with two different areas, they both show many similar themes.…

For that reason alone, the movement should be a welcome intrusion in everyone’s thinking. The “Notes of George Commoner” offers a similar, but disappointing end to Jefferson Bean’s brief excursion into the real world. For Tea Partiers in a world of their own is not that different, although with much greater staying power in American history, which is why it both attracts and repels so many. I rather doubt that I will write again as I pursue paths that take me deep in a woods that I don’t know and from which I rather doubt I will emerge…
