1943 Poetry Response
Desiree Adams The Poem “1943” by Donald, Hall was a very good poem. When I looked at the title I thought the poem was going to be about WWII because the year 1943 was during the time of WWII. When I read the poem it was about a bunch of teenagers who are getting prepared for war and trained on how to act and be tough. This poem talks about how teen boys are getting taught in school and other places on how to be men in the army and go to war. It also talks about how they have to realize that war is bloody in brutal ,so they have to have tough skin if they want to make it into the military.

This poem reminds me of the story my grandfather told me about when he enlisted to the marines and had to go to Paris, Island for basic training. He told me that back home they made war sound like something a young boy should do in order to become a man. When he got to basic training he told me he was very nervous and as soon as he got there they trained them and toughened them up for the war that was happen in Vietnam. My grandfather would tell me about how the Marines made him into a fine man because it taught him to put away all the childish things and it toughened him up , so he could be able to face the challenges of the real adult world and life. The poem makes me feel glad that young boys are getting taught back then about how to be real men. I think that some of the boys we have in our society need a harder class other than ROTC to teach them how to become real men and grow up. This poem talks about how they were teaching boys in high school how to prepare for the war and becoming better men in life.

In this poem, “1943” by Donald Hall, hall is telling of a high school student who lost his final round in the heavyweight finals. After high school he left for the war and shortly after enlisting “died in the third wave at Tarawa” which was similar to his last experiences in school. In lines four through six Hall states, “Every morning of the war our Brock-Hall Diary delivered milk from horse-drawn wagons to wooden back porches in southern Connecticut.” This quote leads us to the theme “As war goes on, as does life.” He talks about how everyday life still goes on even though “marines bled to death in the surf”. In line ten Hall states “- with frostbitten feet as white as milk.” He is showing symbolism by comparing soldier’s cold white feet…

This story is about a nineteen year old soldier named Paul Baumer followed by his friends while at war and it shows how it effects each and every one of them physically and mentally.“We were all at once terribly alone; and alone we must see it through.”(Remarque 13) World War I was a tragic war with more than 9 million soldiers dead, and roughly 21 million were injured in the end. Germany and France both sent millions of men between the ages 15-50 into the war. Throughout the book and the movie you can see and understand all of the tragic deaths that occurred on both sides of this war. Not only were there millions of deaths by the fighting but also many deaths by other things such as, soldier dying from lack of food, lack of reinforcements, rats running through the trenches, and lastly deadly gases in the air. Any soldier that actually did survive was considered “lucky” to Paul Baumer. “We are not youth any longer. We don’t want to take the world by storm. We are fleeing. We fly from ourselves. From our life.…

The meaning of this poem is that although war can tear apart the world as you may know it, leaving chaos in its wake, as portrayed by the bombed out building, and the broken furniture in the street. It also gives a glimpse of the fact that people are resilient and will rebuild, as we see by the…

The writer, Phillis Wheatley, uses many descriptive details about the natural world in her poem. She compares the sun setting and the new evening with many rural details. For example, in line two, she says: "The pealing thunder shook the heav'nly plain;" She is referring to the empty plains of a rural area. I also wondered how the poem would sound if she chose to praise the evening using details of an urban setting.…

This is a very critical and harsh poem. Stephen Crane seems to have a more pessimistic outlook on life than other poems he has written, and nowhere else does that pessimistic outlook come through in his poetry than here. The pattern of the poem affixes a cynical, satirical statement after every statement of "War is kind." For example, "War is kind, Hoarse booming drums of the regiment, little souls who thirst for fight, these men were born to drill and die. The unexplained glory flies above them." Especially when Crane says "the unexplained glory flies above them," he is making a powerful statement by questioning whether all the death and destruction is really worth it. This questioning is very important, because many wars are not really for what they seem to be for. There are exceptions of course, perhaps World War II and the fight to end the holocaust, perhaps the Civil War and the fight to end slavery, but for the most part, wars are usually conflicts between cultures over natural resources and disagreements over cultural values. The glory of war, the patriotism, the nationalism; Crane is trying to state that all of these emotions we associate with most wars are really made up so that generally people will feel better about their actions in the long term. Crane questions whether or not war is ever really worth anything to anybody in this poem. Crane clearly does not think so, considering the level of sarcasm he uses throughout the poem, especially at the end when he powerfully states "Mother whose heart hung humble as a button On the bright splendid shroud of your son, Do not weep.…

“The Soldier” is a sonnet-type poem composed by a First World War veteran and also a war poet named Rupert Brooke. This sonnet finds a soldier speculating about his possible death as we goes away to war, which he feels should not be mourned, but understood as part of a selfless tribute to his much-loved England. This poem was written as the First World War broke out in 1914, as part of a series of many sonnets written by Rupert Brooke. Patriotism is a true form of love. It is a form of love which is pure, yet which has the ability to rage fire for the sake of itself. It is the form of love which is unconditional, immense, true and real for one's land, one's true mother. Rupert Brooke has presented his patriotism in a spectacular way in this poem. The poem encompasses the memories of a fallen soldier who declares his patriotism to his homeland by stating that his sacrifice shall be the eternal ownership of England. It also deals with the death and accomplishments of a soldier.…

The reason I picked this poem is because of my mom. I really appreciate what she does for me. When I was at home, I thought my mom was so picky, because she always judged my behaviors. She always says, “You cannot do this. You cannot do that. This is wrong. That’s incorrect. Why did you do that? It’s so bad. Be more polite.” Statements like these causes me to really want to get my freedom. I loved her, but I thought that she was changing me too much. That’s what I was thinking at that time. After I graduated from high school in China, I came to The US. At the beginning, the feeling was totally fantastic for me. I felt like I suddenly have my freedom that I have always wondered about, but after a few days, I started to miss my mom. My mom does not…

The rain this morning pattered on the rooftop like the joyful tears running off my family’s face before I left. They were proud of me as I was going to fight for my country. I lie awake this morning staring at my name tag which says William Harding Bowyer on the front of it thinking about what was going to happen on my first day of training as a new recruit for the U.S. I want to train so I can become a paratrooper. I can't wait to jump out of the plane and fall into battle to defend my country. I just hope I survive because if I don't my family will be heart broken since I would never be able to see them again. “GET UP GET UP”, the General screamed so I jumped out of my bed and put my uniform on.…
