If you choose this option, you must have your topic approved well in advance of the first workshop day.
When grading your essay, I will focus on a few areas. I will be focusing on your ability to write a valid organizational thesis, to use signal phrases, to write in-text citations, to create a works cited page, and to write effective topic sentences.
This will be my first impression of your writing, so please make sure you apply maximum effort. This essay is about your ability to follow directions, so please read through the directions carefully and follow my rules and other requirements stated in your syllabus. Good Luck!
Requirements:
You must write a minimum of three pages (not including the works cited page).
The best essays often go beyond the page minimum.
Failure to meet the minimum length requirement will result in a five-point penalty for each missing half page.
You must come prepared on each workshop day.
I will deduct five points from your essay if you do not have a typed and printed outline on the first workshop day.
I will deduct twenty points from your essay if you do not have a completed typed and printed rough draft on the second workshop day.
You must use and cite at least three sources in your essay.
You are allowed only one external source.
Your essay must be double-spaced and MLA formatted.
You must submit the final draft and copies of any external sources in your folder.
I will deduct three points from your essay if you fail to submit your external sources
You must staple your works cited page to your essay
I will deduct three points if your essay isn’t stapled (I will not provide a stapler to you).
I will not grade your works cited if it is not stapled to your essay, and you will lose five points.
You must upload your essay on Blackboard.
I will deduct ten points from your essay if you do not upload your essay within twenty-four hours of the due date.
You may turn in a checklist for extra credit.
You must avoid my pet-peeves:
I will deduct one point from your essay for each time you use “you” in your essay.
I will deduct one point from your essay for each run-on, comma splice, and fragment.
