Understand how to support positive outcomes for children and young people

Even from an early age, children’s choices, even simple ones, can have an impact on their life chances and outcomes such as choosing which toys to play with at pre-school or which friends to play with, a child may develop a friendship with another child who is perhaps a bit louder and boisterous and may display unwanted behaviour, this choice of friend may have a negative impact on the child's behaviour at home or in other settings they move onto. Whilst the child has the right to choose their friends, it is the practitioner responsibility to involve the child in setting expectations of their behaviour and help them to make a positive contribution, which is one of the outcomes of the Every Child Matters (ECM) framework. According to Tassoni (2010) the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) clearly states that a curriculum for children under five years should be balanced of adult-led and child-initiated activities; an environment needs to be rich in resources and displayed in such a way that the children can determine their own play.

Children and young people throughout their lives will make choices such as whether to eat healthy or unhealthy or start smoking or drinking. An early years setting should encourage healthy snacks and encourage parents to supply healthy balanced lunchboxes. The setting should involve the children in activities and discussions about the importance of healthy living but there will come a point where the children can choose for themselves. If a child/young person chooses to eat unhealthily this will have a negative impact on their wellbeing, this could have a dramatic or not so effect on their health in later life. For example they could develop diabetes or become obese from choosing to continually eat an unhealthy diet, but in a less extreme scenario they could just have bad skin conditions (spotty

    Healthy eating is of great importance as it has a drastic effect on one’s life, and more importantly on the lives of children. Providing appropriate nutrition and educating elementary children of the significance of proper nutrition are essential factors for proper growth and development, chronic disease prevention, and the achievement of academic success (Pittman et al., 2012). Researchers stress the importance of positive peer relationships in childhood and later life. The absence of positive social interactions in childhood is linked to negative consequences later in life, such as withdrawal, loneliness, depression, and feelings of anxiety. In addition, low acceptance by peers in the early years is a predictor of grade retention, school dropout, and mental health and behavior problems. Educators can do many things to promote and support positive social interactions and prevent challenging behavior. The authors use a question-and-answer format to describe strategies that support the teaching pyramid's second and third levels (creating supportive environments and fostering positive social interactions), with the questions coming from many early childhood educators across the United States. Fox and colleagues (2003) describe a pyramid framework for supporting social competence and preventing young children's challenging behavior. This article highlights environmental and teaching strategies that support and facilitate the development of preschoolers' peer interaction skills--the skills children use to successfully interact with one another, such as sharing, taking turns, asking for assistance, and helping one another. The article focuses on the relevance of the physical environment and the teaching strategies to be able to facilitate the development on the peer interaction skills of preschoolers in the U.S. The physical environment has been viewed to affect the social, emotional development and learning of the child. Therefore the topic of our assignment is how to promote healthy eating in children and centres. During our work term internship we noticed that the meals offered were not healthy food.
