ASEPTIC TECHNIQUES AND SOURCES OF MICROBIAL CONTAMINATION. Introduction The spread of infections has come to a point where it has become catastrophic. Aseptic technique is the method used to prevent contamination of infections. It is widely used in hospitals‚ pharmacy‚ and pharmaceutical industries and in laboratories. Different establishments have come up with more ways to improve infection control. In hospitals health care acquired infections are costing the NHS £1 Billion a year and

| CELLULAR DIVISION AND REPLICATION WITHIN MITOSIS AND MEIOSIS ABSTRACT The processes of mitosis and meiosis were examined along with their frequency as well as each of the different steps and their time duration. It was found that the interphase stage of both mitosis and meiosis was the longest of all the stages as this was where most of the ‘action’ was happening such as cell growth and duplication of all cell organelles and chromosome replication also. It was also found that mitosis and

What Is Microbiology? Microbiology is the study (logy) of very small (micro) living (bio) things. Microbiology is the study of microorganisms. These "bugs" include: bacteria (that’s the Latin plural for bacterium); viruses (that’s the non-Latin plural for virus - virii sounds weird‚ so I don’t say it); and‚ fungi (that’s the Latin plural for fungus - which by now you have guessed‚ or already knew‚ and may not be all that interested to know‚ anyway). Microbiology is actually made up of several

Lab Report #1: Observing Bacteria Microbiology Abstract: This lab exercise familiarized the student with the use of a microscope by observing and identifying various different slides under the microscope. The student practiced observing the given slides under the 10x‚ 40x‚ and 100x (oil immersion) objective lenses‚ which allowed for the identification of the different organism’s shapes and sizes. Purpose: The aim of this exercise is to equip the student with the knowledge

Theodor Wilhelm Engelmann was a German microbiologist whose 1882 experiment measured the effects of different colors of light on photosynthetic activity and showed that the conversion of light energy to chemical energy took place in the chloroplast. In 1881‚ he observed the movement of bacteria towards the chloroplasts in a strand of “Spirogyra” algae. Engelmann hypothesized that the bacteria were moving in response to oxygen generated by the photo synthetically active chloroplasts in the algae.
