Abstract: The purpose of this lab is to prepare phenylmagnesium bromide‚ a Grignard reagent‚ and react it with benzophenone to give triphenylmethanol. Once made‚ the Grignard reagent will do a nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon of the ketone‚ benzophenone. The result is an alkoxide that is then protonated to give the alcohol‚ triphenylmethanol. The purity of the final product will then be considered by melting point and IR spectroscopy. Final purified triphenylmethanol weighed 8.02 grams

Lab 3: Grignard Synthesis Objective: The goal of this lab is to synthesize a Grignard reagent from bromobenzene and magnesium metal in diethyl ether. This same Grignard reagent would then be used to prepare a tertiary alcohol and then purify and characterize the product. CASE STUDY US MAGNESIUM SEEKS PROTECTION In Feb 2004‚ US Magnesium‚ the sole surviving US producer of magnesium‚ a metal that is primarily used in the manufacture of certain automobile parts and aluminum cans‚ filed a petition with the US International Trade Commission (ITC) contending that a surge in imports had caused material damage to the US industry’s employment‚ sales‚ market share‚ and profitability. According to US Magnesium‚ Russian and Chinese producers had been selling the metal at prices

Next‚ apparatus for Grignard reaction was placed in an oven for an hour to ensure no moisture was present then set up for reflux with a dropping funnel to equalise pressure and a jack to allow easy removal of apparatus from heat. Magnesium turnings (2.68g)‚ anhydrous diethyl ether (15 cm3)‚ a crystal of iodine and a stirrer bar were added to the round bottomed flask (250 cm3) and anhydrous diethyl ether (25 cm3) and dry bromobenzene (15.7g) were added to the dropping funnel‚ ensuring

addition of Grignard reagents to three different carbonyl groups: a ketone‚ an ester‚ and a carbonate. Grignard reagents are organometallic compounds that have a carbon-metal bond‚ such as carbon-magnesium. Grignard reagents are formed from the reaction of an alkyl‚ cycloalkyl‚ or aryl halide and magnesium metal in dry ether. The reaction is shown below in figure 1. Figure 1: Formation of a Grignard reagent The Carbon bonded to the metal is both a strong nucleophile and base. The Carbon
