Dom Pedro I (1798-1834) was the first Emperor of Brazil and was also Dom Pedro IV‚ King of Portugal. He is best remembered as the man who declared Brazil independent from Portugal in 1822. He set himself up as Emperor of Brazil but returned to Portugal to claim the crown there after his father died‚ abdicating Brazil in favor of his young son Pedro II.
