Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the world; however it can be quite expensive due to the extraction method‚ electrolysis. Aluminium ore is called bauxite‚ it is then purified into a white powder (aluminium oxide) then the aluminium can be extracted. To turn it into aluminium they heat the powder till it’s molten so electricity can pass through it. Its melting point is over 2‚000 Celsius‚ so it would therefore be quite expensive. One way of cutting costs is by dissolving it in molten cryolite

INVESTIGATION investigating the properties of Period 3 oxides Aim The purpose of this experiment is to examine the oxides of Period 3 elements and describe their bonding and structure. Introduction You carry out an investigation along similar lines to the work you did on the chlorides of the elements in Period 3 (Experiment 4.12). However‚ you will not be asked to test the oxides with cyclohexane because unlike the covalent chlorides‚ most of the oxides are not composed of discrete molecules. Therefore

Pure aluminium is a relatively soft‚ silvery white metal. When exposed to air‚ a thin coating of Aluminium oxide gives it a dull lustre. It is three times less dense than water‚ and has great strength when alloyed‚ it doesnt rust and has high electrical conductivity‚ and Aluminium is also ductile‚ making it a very useful metal. Aluminium readily makes alloys with copper‚ zinc‚ magnesium‚ manganese and silicon. Aluminium foil is 92-99% pure aluminium. Other uses of aluminium alloys include computers
