Abstract — This paper deals with the simulation of the closed loop operation of a Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Motor Drive system with a Z-source inverter and conventional six switch inverter, and their performance comparison. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance evaluation of two inverter topologies. The comparison shows that the Z-source inverter is very promising for BLDC motor drives. Key Words-Brushless DC motor drive; Z-source inverter; hysteresis current controller; speed control.

Mrs. Lekshmi A. Senior Lecturer, Department of Electrical Engineering, College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, INDIA Email: alekshmi@rediffmail.com a BLDC motor drive system fed by a Z-source inverter will have the advantages of both of them, and will be suitable for the fuel cell based electric drive systems. The output voltage of Z-source inverter can be easily controlled by controlling the shoot-through time by using space vector PWM technique [9-10]. For the sake of comparison, the dynamic and steady state performance of the Z-source inverter fed BLDC motor drive are referred to the ones of the conventional VSI fed BLDC motor drive. This paper deals with the simulation of the closed loop operation of a BLDC motor fed by conventional six step inverter and Z-source inverter. MATLAB/SIMULINK schematic of the BLDC motor drive system is developed and the same is used for simulation. A detailed evaluation of the proposed inverter is presented in the following sections. The configuration, operating principle and control method of proposed electric drive system are described in section II. A modeling procedure for the conventional VSI fed BLDC motor is also discussed. Section III deals with the analysis of Z-source inverter fed BLDC motor

To explore the effectiveness of the proposed techniques, computer simulation has been carried out. The conventional PID, GA-PID and ACO-PID controllers were simulated using Matlab-Simulink software on a PC. In the simulation software package, operation of the entire system [i.e. the working of the voltage source inverter, switches operation, position of the rotor, reference and actual speed values, speed error and change in the error] can be observed.…

The UC1638 family of integrated circuits are advanced pulse width modulators intended for a variety of PWM motor drive and amplifier applications requiring either uni-directional or bi-directional drive circuits. Similar in architecture to the UC1637, all necessary circuitry is included to generate an analog error signal and modulate two bi-directional pulse train outputs in proportion to the error signal magnitude and polarity. Key features of the UC1638 include a programmable high speed triangle oscillator, a 5X differential current sensing amplifier, a high slew rate error amplifier, high speed PWM comparators, and two 50mA open collector as well as two ±500mA totem pole output stages. The individual circuit blocks are designed to provide practical operation to switching frequencies of 500kHz. Significant improvements in circuit speed, elimination of many external programming components, and the inclusion of a differential current sense amplifier, allow this controller to be specified for higher performance applications, yet maintain the flexibility of the UC1637. The current sense amplifier in conjunction with the error amplifier can be configured for average current feedback. The additional open collector outputs provide a drive signal continued…

Electric drive system is a vehicle that powered by electricity. Its popularity was quite supporting during the late 19th century and early 20th century. It is equipped with an electric motor and a controller. On the other hand, the hybrid car is a drive system which uses more than one power sources to drive the system, thus it runs with a battery powered electric motor and an internal combustion engine. In this report i will describe the features, operations and applications of both the electric and hybrid alternative drive systems.…

INTRODUCTION Space Vector Modulation became a standard for the switching power converters and important research effort has been dedicated to this topic. Tens of papers, research reports and patents were developed in the last ten years and the theory of Space Vector Modulation is already wellestablished. Diverse implementation methods were tried and some dedicated hardware pieces were developed based on this principle. The initial use of Space Vector Modulation at three-phase voltage-source inverters has been expanded by application to novel three-phase topologies as AC/DC Voltage Source Converter, AC/DC or DC/AC Current Source Converters, Resonant Three-Phase Converters, B4-inverter, Multilevel Converters, AC/AC Matrix Converters, and so on). This tutorial presents the base theory of SVM when applied to a 3-phase voltage source inverter. II. REVIEW OF SPACE VECTOR THEORY A. History The roots of vectorial representation of three-phase systems are presented in the research contributions of Park [1] and Kron [2], but the decisive step on systematically using the Space Vectors was done by Kovacs and Racz [3]. They provided both mathematical treatment and a physical description and understanding of the drive transients even in the cases when machines are fed through electronic converters. In early seventies, Space Vector theory was already widely used by industry and presented in numerous books. Stepina [4] and Serrano-Iribarnegaray [5] suggested that the correct designation for the analytical tool to analyzing electrical machines has to be “Space Phasor” instead of “Space Vector”. “Space Phasor” concept is nowadays mainly used for current and flux in analysis of electrical machines. Abstract- Basically, the motor drive system comprises a voltage source inverter-fed induction motor (VSIM): namely a three-phase voltage source inverter and the induction motor. The squirrel-cage induction motor voltage equations are based on an orthogonal d-q reference-rotating frame where the coordinates rotate with the controlled source frequency. The paper presents a novel fuzzy logic controller for high performance induction motor drive system. The inputs to the fuzzy logic controller are the linguistic variables of speed error and change of speed error, while the output is change in switching control frequency of the voltage source inverter. In this paper a comparison between fuzzy logic controller and traditional PI controllers are presented. The results validate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy logic controller for high performance of induction motor drive. Simulink software that comes along with MATLAB was used to simulate the proposed model.…

Brush-type DC Motor: has a mechanical brush pair on the motor frame & makes contact with a commutator ring assembly on the rotor in order to communicate current, i.e. to switch current from one winding to another, as a function of rotor position so that the magnetic fields of the rotor & stator are always at a 90o angle relative to each other. Brushless DC Motor: is an inside-out version of the brush-type DC motor, i.e. the rotor has the permanent magnets & the stator has the winding. Hence, magnetic fields of the rotor & stator must be perpendicular to each other at all rotor positions. Communication is done by solid-state power transistors based on a rotor position sensor, hence it is considered a servo motor.…
