Causes, Practices, and Effects of War Guide: World War 1

Type of War:
• Total War: War that includes entire resources and population of a nation used to fight. The entire population is contributing towards the war using military, political, economic and cultural.

Cause of War:
• Short: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia, Germany declares war on
Russia, Germany declares war on France, Britain declares war on Germany, Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia.
• Immediate: Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (Assassinated by a member of the “Black Hand”, a Serbian nationalist group, Austria declared war on July 28, 1914, causing Russia to declare war on Germany since they agreed to help Austria in the event of war. After that a web of alliances began to tangle bringing in more countries to the war then required.)
• Long: Militarism (Glorifying ones military, building and maintaining the military strength necessary to win a major war; like Britain bulking up its navy just to meet the large army presented by Germans). Alliances (Agreement between two or more countries to work together to keep safe; like the Triple Entente including Great Britain, France, and Russia). Nationalism ( Extreme pride in one nation or state; like how the Germans felt strong nationalism after the Franco-Prussian War). Imperialism ( Domination by one country over another like political or economic; like Britain and France keeping Germany out of Africa to stop them becoming a threatening power).

Practices:
• Technology, Tactics, and Strategy: In the 1914 machines guns were introduced into warfare. The machine guns would require a four-man crew and could fire 400-600 rounds per minute. It provided such a space between the men that killing became something that required nor remorse or emotion. Tactics used were used in the old ways of battle. Generals who had fought once themselves used the same tactics to run their army. French would execute a few men in front of their
