Chinese Characters are similar to Egyptian Hieroglyphs; many characters are originally from pictures. Pictograph is an old writing, which simply draw a picture to represent a thing. For example, the character of a mountain develops from original drawing of three peaks together.

This VAKL tool can help students learn Chinese character by discovering similar shape and building a connection between a picture and a character. Use four steps to demonstrate how to use the tool in a classroom. First, use post-it sticky notes to make pictures on yellow notes, and English words and Chinese character (with pinyin) on green notes. The reason of using sticky notes is easy to move and reuse these notes. Second, put these notes on the top of a board into three categories. Third, pick up a picture, and ask students to identify it in English. Pick up related an English word and put on the left side of the picture. Forth, explain how to use the shape of the picture finding a Chinese word. Using think-aloud help student understand the matching process. Compare with a picture and a word to find similar shape in them. And then put the word on the right side of the picture.

Next, a teacher can deliberately make a mistake in next example, and ask students for help to fix it. So the teacher can see how the understand levels of students are. Do this as another demonstration how to figure out a similar shape between a picture and a Chinese character. Let students do it individually for the rest of notes. Make corrections as need.

Put all the notes into a zip bag, and let students use it in group activity. After student can match it very well, teacher can take pictures out and let student directly match English word and Chinese character together.

Similarly, recognize words from their word shape are called “Bouma shape” by modern psychologists. It is a very effective strategy for word recognition, especially when teaching homophone.

Participating is one of the best ways to help students remember quickly what they have just learned in class. For example, students can try to answer the questions, raise their hand when the teacher asks for students to show their homework or write on the board, join in groups for discussing or doing assignments, and ask questions to make sense and solve what they misunderstand. The second simple skill is taking plentiful notes. To make good notes, students can use colorful pens or colorful notes for different information, and highlight the important words or ideas in notebooks and textbooks. When students are expected to focus on the lesson, using initials, shorthand, and abbreviated symbols are also helpful to follow the class. In addition, making mind maps is an effective way to capture all the knowledge after every lesson. Students can create a mind map on paper or in an app on a tablet; furthermore, students can find out several useful software tools, which are available to buy or for free, on the Internet such as the mind map software tool of Tony Buzan, Xmind and so on. To this end, students can increase their success by taking notes, participating in class, and creating effective mind…

However with the use of their Hieroglyphic symbols the Egyptian people created an alphabetic system similar to that of our present day English alphabet. This allowed the Egyptian people to send messages between each other and record information for future generations to learn from, all through the means of art. The symbols used by the Egyptians in their hieroglyphic alphabet are different to that of the Australian Aboriginal art works. Egyptian hieroglyphs consist of small symbols and figures. The figures include humans in varying positions, animals and a range of shapes and patterns. The variety of Egyptian hieroglyphs is immense. They were not just alphabetic symbols, but also included syllabic symbols and occasionally even determinative symbols the latter portrayed the words meaning itself. None of this would be possible without the vast number of artistic symbols used by the Egyptian scribes who created these intellectual works of…
