The speech grabs the reader’s attention and interest right at the beginning because of it speaking about the department store, new fashions and things and all those things being free. However, it takes a completely different turn and speaks of a whole other topic. The speaker uses Time Magazine for the statistic and typically in my opinion, Time Magazine would be overall considered a reputable source. Overall the speaker does a great job at delivering a good well rounded speech; after all he is an salesperson at Sears. I am sure that a lot of what the speaker is speaking about (shoplifting) it has come from personal experiences that the speaker has had. There are so many people that have worked in retail that can very well relate to what…
In this particular piece I found that Villanueva's "street talk" made it hard to understand, such as "Bed-Stuy." In addition to Villanueva's poor English, his sequence of events in the story made it very difficult to follow. He would jump from talking about one event in the story, such as school life, to something totally different, such as boxing. Both poor English and jumping to different events often happened simultaneously toward the ending of the story, which made it nearly impossible for me to read. Toward the back half of the book, I would often read a portion of the story and wonder what I just read. I would read one paragraph of the story and feel that I had a good grasp of what was going on in the story, and then move on and read the next paragraph, and be left clueless on what he was trying to talk about, because the two topics didn't have any real…

In the movie of ‘The Outsiders’, there were a lot of camera movements. At the beginning of the film, the music lyrics restate the word gold, the opening tittles in gold and a golden sun. The first shot establishes the setting of the entire setting. The low angle of the camera makes the story seem like a very personal matter that the audience is nosily watching. Then it quickly turns to the Socs, getting back to their car, and pans quickly back to Johnny and Pony. Then, it zooms in on Pony, to show that he is the main character. For example, there were a lot of close-ups. There was a close up of Johnny’s hand on the knife. The effect it had was that kill someone, so the knife symbolized killing. There was also a close up of Bob’s rings. If someone is watching the film for the first time and they see Johnny’s bruises, they would be wondering why he has those bruises on his face. Since they know that Bob is their enemy, so they would then know that it was Bob’s rings that caused the bruises on Johnny’s face. After Johnny ran up to Bob with violence, the screen was red. The red screen was actually blood and blood signifies violence and death. There was also a view of Bob’s body. First they gave a downward view of his body then there was a real close up of his body. We could see that he had blood on his body and he was not moving, so it meant that he was dead.…
Martinez uses interior monologue to characterize his protagonist Manny. As Manny observes the Mexican field workers he says “for some reason I thought he was the best man on the field” (17). This suggests that Manny also admires other people with good work ethic, and sympathetic to the Mexican immigrants. While talking to Mr. Hart Manny says to himself “Too embarrassed to tell him that attending another school was just a dream of my mom’s... another one that probably wasn’t going to hatch…” (43). This shows Manny doesn’t share personal thoughts with his teacher. After the boxing match Manny has an epiphany “the whole fight shouldn’t have been given so much meaning…” (138). This shows Manny feels apart of his Razo, but not ashamed because he sees the situation more deeply. After being called out at the party “… I saw the reflection of a ridiculous boy. It was me looking at myself…” (181). This reveals Manny just realizes who he was at the time. When sitting in his living room Manny realizes how “wondrous” his family and home are (216). This shows the point where Manny finally accepts his own life for what it is.…
After work, one of the employers tried to organize a strike for higher wages, but Juan snitches on the man instead and gets promoted. When Juan finally intersect his own letter to Mariana, the narrator describes, “Naturally, he censored it without regret.…

Crime is an unpredictable and a unexplainable violent thing. Many groups that have different interests who seek in promoting in using their own resources to claim their issue is called social construction of crime. For example, Gary LaFree (1989) conducted a study that was based on the study of sexual assault. He found out that men who are accused of sexual assault are then less likely to be convicted of rape only if their victims have had any sort of a bad reputation or an unsuitable living conditions. Yet, the report of the assault was not reported correctly and all of these factors have no legal definition of what the rape consisted of. However, the way in how rape was being explained is called socially constructed. Being socially constructed…
Ever since the hollywood studio system, many popular films today use the same conventions to tell a compelling story. Not all movies follow the rules, but Goodfellas is no exception to these conventions. However, using these rules effectively plays a big part in a good film, and only in the final scene of Goodfellas do we see a certain number of these film elements added. With the use of extreme closeups, non-conventional plot order, and breaking the fourth wall, Goodfellas takes full advantage of the film grammar and narrative elements by introducing them in the final scene to emphasize the importance of it and make audiences think about the story.…
