Being Overweight is not always your fault

In America, approximately 70% of adults are either obese or overweight. Not all of the people in the percentile are overweight or obese due to not caring about their body. Some people can be overweight due to the fact that they are genetically predisposed to overeating. “Some people may have a higher risk of obesity because they are genetically predisposed to overeat or lead a sedentary lifestyle” (“Some People”). Not all people have the same ability to turn down food whenever they want. That causes people to be overeaters, thus, making them overweight. However, not only can some people be genetically predisposed to overeat, but most Americans have a different mindset in their eating choices. Most of them think that just because a yogurt has a little bit of calories, it is automatically a healthy snack. You can’t judge someone because they are overweight or obese because you don’t know what their reasons are and you don’t know what they are going through. There are a myriad of reasons as to why people are obese and overweight in the United States.

Few people in America find it difficult to turn down a little piece of bread or a piece of chocolate when they are not hungry. Honestly it is pretty difficult for me. “The differences could explain why some people find it much harder than others to turn food down when they are not hungry or motivate themselves to exercise” (“Some people”). Remember that not everyone thinks the same and we all have different mindsets when it comes to taking care of our bodies. Not everyone can motivate themselves to exercise. For some people it is one of the hardest things to do. It is also very difficult for some people to say “no” to food.

Some overweight and obese people are the way that they are not because they don’t understand how many calories are in a certain food, but because they are compulsive eaters and just can’t control themselves. When someone is an overeater genetically it is not their fault. It’s their genes that make them the way that they are. “There are more than 200 genes involved in appetite and weight regulation, and a missing gene, even one, can prevent a person from [feeling] full” (“Compulsive Overeating”). It’s amazing to think that just by missing one gene that’s involved in appetite can make u feel so empty even when you’re eating. It is actually rare for something like this to happen to someone because “only 12 people in the world have been found with this deficiency” (“Compulsive Overeating”).

Sometimes it’s not people’s fault that they are overweight. It is their income. That is another factor that affects the health of some people. Some people would love to eat healthy food but the healthy food is too expensive. Thus, this causing people to gain weight. Large numbers of Americans, particularly those who live in, low-income areas, find themselves in food desert where there is no decent grocery store or market to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. Instead, many low-income people [rely] on small corner stores, which are often underwritten by big manufactures. It's particularly out of reach for low-income mothers, who bear both the brunt of family food preparation and also blame for things like childhood obesity and diabetes. (Filipovic)

There are a lot of factors for people to be overweight or obese. Another one, would be that some people are simply just not knowledgeable about the food they consume. A lot of people sometimes eat because it ‘looks’ healthy. “But I think many people don’t realize how much fat and calories are in the foods they are eating, or that ordering the broccoli dripping in butter and cheese isn’t the healthy choice” (Mueller).Just because a vegetable is supposed to be healthy doesn’t mean that putting butter and cheese won’t change that. The survey, conducted by Consumer...
