COURSE DESCRIPTION: This a joint course between Southern University and Louisiana State University. The course is designed to address a multiracial audience derived from the student bodies of Louisiana State University and Southern University. The course will have three major objectives. Students will (1) examine the question of race relations in an interdisciplinary setting to include historical, sociological, political, and literary viewpoints; (2) recognize the genesis, evolution and dissemination of racial/ethnic prejudices, conflicts and tensions as well as the recognized dynamics of interracial harmony; and (3) apply these newly acquired critical perspectives to analyze and compare selected topics and related texts.

Required Texts: Bonilla-Silva, Eduardo, Racism Without Racist: Colorblind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality in the United States. Vaca, Nicolas, The Unspoken Conflict between Latinos and Blacks and What it Means for America. Steinberg, Stephen, Race Relations: A Critique. Alexander, Michelle, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration

Additional reading assignments and viewings will be given during the semester placed on moodle and blackboard.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Attendance and Assignments: This course meets Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. Since the course is held alternately at Southern University (SU) and Louisiana State University (LSU), please pay careful attention to the location indicated on the syllabus for that particular class day.     After reading the story Battle Royal I decided to write this paper because the discrimination issues that we still seeing a couple of decades after this story has been wrote. Discrimination is not only about black and whites is all about the different cultures on America and how they interact with each other and the bias around each culture example Hispanics, Africans, Asians, and other ethnic groups in the US.     In reading and examining the arguments made by Blauner, Ture and Hamilton and Steinberg, I have come to realize or maybe just acknowledge more so, the many aspects of race, racism and its role within our nation. Not to say that I was oblivious to it (race) before this class, but I had not taken the opportunity before to examine it as closely as we have this semester. Primarily, I had associated race only to the color of one 's skin rather than what it is in actuality; a social construct. Although this social construct / racial hierarchy may change over time with political, economic and historical changes, it has been proven by empirical sociological evidence to be so deeply embedded within our society that it effects both directly and indirectly: 1) the discrimination utilized to mobilize or immobilize certain groups, 2) the stereotypes and stigmas impressed upon groups, and 3) the distribution of resource shares . Each of these three dynamics are central to the placement, progression and regression of racial groups, in which each effects the other in a constant cycle of discrimination, identifiablity, and resource shares (Aguirre & Turner). An excellent example of this cycle is in figure 2.1 on page 36 of our American Ethnicity books.…
