Swearing among Vietnamese youngsters 1. What is the problem?
No matter what country you’re from or what language you speak, there are some things that you just should not say. In each culture, certain gestures and words are just “taboo”. And, in Vietnam, swearing is offensive as people saying bad words or some words like “taboo” is stereotyped rude and low-educated. By contrast, teenage language with so many slangs, swears seems to have become popular with a number of some children and teenagers in Viet Nam now. We can hear clearly many “terms” like: "may lam cai đ*t gi zay?" (What the f*** are you going to do?), “ĐCM” (Damn it), “VL”, “VKL”( both of them have the same meaning with “Damn it!” or maybe used in wonderful situations), “ b*a v*i” (What a stupid idiot!), “v*i” plus various words made up by kids, teenagers (god – damned). On the other hand, many students also use such offensive English words like: F word, B word (b*ch, f**k)….but they do not even know what these words really mean, they just say that. Therefore, we have seen these typical ways of communicating, speaking of Viet Nam people especially teenagers on so many social networks like Facebook, twitter, ftalk, zingme, others forum and even at a class in the school.
So, with swearing, what is in a word? Isn’t a swear word just a collection of letters whose meaning is only what people make of it? Swear words can be categorized based on the type of idea they represent. For example, you might think of a number of words that have shocking religious connotations, or it can be originated of speech in cases involving discrimination or sexual harassment or sexual discrimination. All kind of this taboo language was come out of Viet Nam’s youth mouth. Other taboo words will conjure up ideas related to disgusting things like human waste that are unclean and can cause disease. We do not know exactly about whose meaning or how long they appeared and spread to youngster
