In 1798, when Vietnamese Christians were persecuted for their faith, many of those Christians hid in a jungle in La Vang. While they were taking refuge in the jungle, they would often pray and say the rosary. However, many people became ill because of the conditions in the jungle. One day, a lady dressed in an áo dài, a traditional Vietnamese dress, carried a child in her arms with two angels beside her and appeared to the Christians. The lady told them to boil leaves from the jungle to use as medicine to cure the people who were ill. She also told them that if people came to this spot to pray, their prayers will be heard and answered. Therefore, the people…

We are all familiar with the Christmas story: the child in the manger, the young mother, Mary, and her husband, Joseph, seeking shelter in the stable where they warmed by the breath of the beast. The word “epiphany” is used to commemorate the event of the wise men coming to the child; it means a showing forth, an unveiling. But what the “gospel depicted is not the revelation of a powerful king surrounded by a splendid court, or of any such symbol of power, which the world might recognize and respect. Christians are asked to look upon this infant, to believe he is the Son of God, the very image of God’s splendor, to recognize him as the Lord of history, the Messiah, the Savior, the Truth, the Way, the Life.” (Lott, B. (2010).…

After a few moments of silent prayer, the people are invited to remain at Gethsemane with Jesus during the night to accompany him in his agony. As the community accompanies Jesus, it is time to accompany Mary in her suffering, in her solitude. This symbolizes the path the dead will take across the heavens. These home altars are also garnished with religious trinkets and food offerings. The foods chosen are generally those that the deceased favored during his or her life. The kinds of things left on an altar are vast and can range from fruits, to cigarettes, and even alcoholic beverages. One of the staples left behind at the altar is salt, as it is considered to be the spice of life. By observing the decor of the chapel, I made the assumption that Jesus Christ was the center of attention. There were beautiful crosses everywhere and pictures of each moment of the crucifixion along the walls. Also, a statue of Mary , Jesus’s mother, was in the front of the sanctuary, and it had several candles around which made her look important. This piece of art was used as an alter for the church members. On the…
