Life on Mars and Life on Earth

• Life on Earth
- Right spot, suitable for life
- Size of earth has allowed the internal heat from leaking too rapidly
- Plate tectonic activity and bulkinism helps maintain and recycle carbon dioxide which helps prevent the earth from freezing
- The magnetic field from the inner core maintains heat at a certain level protecting earth
- Within the atmosphere, there exists hydrogen, water, methane and ammonia
- These gases are subject to lightening and therefore form an electrical discharge
- These interactions of gases, electrical discharge and organic compounds help create amino acids

• Life on Mars
- Does not have a global magnetic field to shield it from solar flares and cosmic rays
- There is evidence of past water channels, dry lakes and minerals
- At present, bacteria is within rocks and soil
- Present and future searches, focuses on the extinction of life

The Celestial Objects

1. Comet
- Larger in size, containing mostly of gas and water with little rock material
- Orbits space, quite visible
- Famous one; Hailey’s Comet
2. Meteor
- Leftovers of comets/asteroids due to collisions
- Contain gas, water, and rock material
- Smaller than comets, size varies, visible
3. Asteroids
- Known as planetoids/smaller planets
- Sizes vary from big to small
- Made of metallic iron and nickel
- On the surface of asteroid – regrowth; fragmented rock debris
- Breccia; surface of asteroid composed of broken rock fragments cemented together
4. Bamnger Crater
- Caused by asteroid
- 50 000 years ago, formed by iron meteor
- 30-50m in diameter and 1200m in diameter, 200m deep

    Plate tectonic theory is a widely excepted theory that the Earth’s lithosphere is made up of plates, both oceanic and continental, which slowly move due to convection currents in the mantle and the asthenosphere. However, it is very hard to be certain as we can’t see the structure of the Earth, so some people do not agree with it. This theory saw the introduction of what we know today to be tectonic plates. Tectonic plates occur where there is radioactive decay in the core and temperatures are extremely high. This decay can occur anywhere in the earth’s core. This results in a plume of magma rising through the mantle creating a thermal current. When this current reaches the surface it spreads through the asthenosphere, before cooling and sinking. These are the convection currents which move tectonic plates. Convection currents will only occur in liquid form and in warm conditions. Tectonic plate theory has evidence to prove that these currents do take place. We know that the mantle is liquid and has high temperatures as magma that originates in the mantle is molten. This means that convection currents can occur. This part of plate tectonic theory is supported by global seismic activity because if convection current did not exist and plates were not able to move, earthquakes would not occur at any plate boundaries, but particularly at collision plate boundaries as there would be no plate movement.…
