I just want to start out by telling you how much I have missed having you in my life. I have found it very difficult to come and talk to you in person, so I wrote this letter in response to yours. As I first read your letter I was both shocked and saddened by your words saying that everything was over between us. But then I realized that you wouldnt risk telling the truth in a letter as it could end up in the wrong hands. I believe that your letter was just a message that you finally wanted to meet up again, but I'm sorry that I couldn't have built up the courage to speak. Although you have married Elizabeth, I know that I am the woman that you love. I know that Elizabeth walked in upon us kissing, but it is better that she knows…

I heard the murmur of their voices as I crossed the hall; the newly wedded couple had just sat down for dinner together, they had arrived only an hour ago. I entered the room to see Rebecca, her dark ash-brown hair, flowing like silk as it trailed down behind her dainty, gentle shoulders. I just couldn’t help to think, what kind of woman she was. I set down the plates, not speaking a word to either Sir or the new Madam; I was not in a position to talk to either of them, as that was not my responsibility. Madame, was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. She seemed so comfortable being herself. She was so lovely, so accomplished, so amusing. This was my first meeting with her, and already I was in awe of her. She had the perfect breeding to be Sir’s wife, she was incredibly beautiful and as time went I on, I realised she had the brains and confidence to outwit anyone. She was entirely different to the second Mrs De Winter.…

Oh, Polonius, Polonius…stabbed cruelly to death! My sweet child, what has happened to you? You’ve gone mad! My darling Hamlet used to be so innocent and playful... The arrow that Cupid had fired at you ricocheted and sunk into my willing flesh. It was a one way relationship, with me loving you and you pushing me away. My life became a slideshow in my head as the days silently slipped by, my mind filled only with thoughts of you. Every morning I would walk alone amongst the grove of sycamore trees, living as if I were dead. Penned in my room throughout the day, I created an artificial night, where I spent countless hours staring into empty space. Why do you not love me like I love you? There is but one clear image in my mind, and that is the image of your face. The beautiful, flawless face that I have loved since the moment I laid my eyes upon you. Everyone else is but a foggy…

I feel extremely responsible for the horrid tragedy of what had happened to that young lady. On the other hand at the time it took place I was in a furious temper; I had tried on this dress, and well.... it just didn’t suit me at all! Then the girl- had tried on the dress as if she was wearing it. And it just suited her. She was the right type for it. She was very pretty too- with big dark eyes. I caught sight of the girl smiling at Miss Francis- as if to say, “doesn’t she look awful”- and I was absolutely furious. That is when it all happened. I lost all sense of what was right and let anger and jealousy fill me up to the direst cruelty. I said without second thought of consideration to the manager, “this girl had been very impertinent”. You see it didn’t seem so bad at the time. She was pretty and looked as if she could take care of herself. Well now I know well- ‘never judge a book by its cover’. However now it is too late! I cannot even go back to say, “sorry Eva Smith”, never mind helping her, thought if I could now that I know the great, vile grief I helped to cause this girls death, I would do all I can for her. Oh why had this had to happen? I feel I can never go to Milward’s again- I noticed even this afternoon- I suppose some of them remember.…
