Which Fruit or Vegetable Generates the Most Electricity?
Abstract
People always talk about saving energy, or becoming “eco-friendly”. People have found many ways to produce electricity, but have they ever tried fruits or vegetables? This project finds which fruit or vegetable produces the most electricity. I tested ten different fruits and vegetables (independent variable) to see which generated the most electricity by measuring the amount of electricity produced in mV (dependent variable) for each one. My hypothesis was that the grapefruit would generate the most electricity compared to all the other fruits and vegetables. The experimental results did not support my hypothesis and showed that the apple had generated the most electricity. This also shows that if a fruit or vegetable is high in citric acid, it does not mean that it will generate the most electricity.
Question
Which fruit or vegetable can generate the most electric input?
Variables
Independent Variable: Fruit or vegetable used. Dependent Variable: Amount of electrical input.
Table 1
Variables
Test Subject | Controlled Variables for each Fruit and Vegetable | Unit of Electricity For All Test Subjects | Apple | Copper nail | mV | Carrot | Zinc nail | | Grapefruit | | | Kiwi | | | Lemon | | | Lime | | | Orange | | | Pear | | | Potato | | | Tomato | | |
Hypothesis
As I test fruits and vegetables, the grapefruit will produce the most electricity.
Background Research Batteries come in many different shapes and sizes. Some are even shaped like fruit. Or wait… maybe they are fruit. Certain fruits or vegetables contain substances called ascorbic acid, citric acid, or NADH (which is a chemical that generates cellular energy). If the experiment is done right these chemicals act as electrolytes and then undergo a process called electrolysis. Electrolysis means a chemical change produced by electric current passing through an

Batteries come in many shapes and sizes. Some are no larger than a pill while others are heavy and huge size, but most batteries have one thing in common. They store chemical energy and change it into electrical energy. The cell is the basic unit producing electricity. A battery has 2 or more cells, but people often use the world battery when talking about a single cell, too, like a dry cell. One of the most popular batteries that have a cell is a dime sized battery which we use for watches. Cells force electrons to flow along conductors.(DK Science 150).…

We made a simple battery out of a potato by placing in it a zinc strip and a copper strip. At the zinc strip, the acid dissolves the zinc freeing electrons. At the copper strip, the acid uses those electrons to form hydrogen gas. Because the zinc strip frees electrons and the copper strip uses electrons, if you put a wire between the two strips, then electrons will flow from the zinc to the copper. This is electrical energy.…

The hypothesis was if a plant is placed under a blue, red, green and sunlight, then the plant under the green light will grow the tallest of all plant. The experiment's independent variable was the type of light the plant is placed under. The dependent variable was the growth of plants (in cm). Some variables that were ceped the same was the amount of water (only at the beginning was the plants given ¼ cup water), the amount of sunlight (5:30 pm-6:30 am), and the amount of seeds (4). The experimental group was the plants placed under the red, blue, and green light. In the experiment the plants weren’t given enough water…
